First of the Season Cruise

Start of the season 2019. The first bigger group of visitors to Campobello Island arrived yesterday, May 13, on the "Pearl Mist", a small cruise ship. 

The “Pearl Mist” visited us already last October and this is her 3rd time to this

island. 

I followed her progress online and we drove up to the tip of the island to monitor her while she was making her way around Head Larbour Lightstation

 and into the Head Harbour Passage. 

The weather was on the chilly side and the morning sky was cloudy. But by the time the “Pearl Mist” reached their destination in Friar’s Bay 

the sky had cleared and the sun was sending some warm rays.

After Boarder Control checking was done the first of three tender boats arrived 

at Welshpool Landing and eager passengers were coming up the gangway.

Several vehicles from the "Roosevelt Campobello International Park" and "Campobello Sightseeing" were ready to take them on.

Their main destination was "Franclin D. Roosevelt’s" summer cottage that had opened its doors just for this occasion. The regular opening 

Date for the season will be on May 25. 

In addition to the cottage our passengers were offered to visit “St Anne’s Anglican Church”, which dates back to 1850, 

and Welshpool Museum which was founded 1889. Before reembarking our guests enjoyed refreshments in Welshpool Hall.

A “Thank You” call from the “Pearl Mist” that came in later in the evening confirmed that all guests enjoyed their outing very much!

Mit einer grösseren Gruppe Kreuzfahrtpassagiere fing gestern für uns die Sommersaison 2019 an.  Die Besucher kamen mit der “Pearl Mist” ein kleineres Kreuzfahrtschiff das maximal 210 Passagiere aufnehmen kann. Ich hatte ihre Position online verfolgt und wir fuhren rechtzeitig zur Inselspitze heraus um zu beobachten wie sie am Leuchtturm vorbei kamen und in die Enge zwischen Deer Island und Campobello hineinfuhren.

Das Wetter war um diese Zeit noch ungemütlich kalt und grau, doch um die Mittagszeit, als die “Peal Mist” in der “Friar`s Bay” for Anker ging, 

kam die Sonne heraus. 

Nachdem die Grenzkontrolle abgewickelt war (das Schiff kam von Rockport, ME, USA) landete das erste von drei Passagierboaten am Dock der Welshpool Landing. Bald kletterten die meist älteren Passagiere die Gangway herauf. 

Oben angekommen warteten schon mehrere Fahrzeuge vom Park und von Peter's "Campobello Sightseeing" darauf sie zum Zielort zu transportieren. Für die heutige Ausfahrt hatte der “Roosevelt Campobello International Park” frühzeitig die Tore zur “Franklin D. Roosevelt's” Sommerhaus geöffnet. Der eigentliche Öffnungstermin ist der 25. Mai. 

Zusätzlich wurden den Kreuzfahrtgästen ein Besuch in der alten (1850) Anglikanischen “St. Anne´s” Kirche und im Museum (1898) angeboten. Bevor sie wieder zurück auf ihr Kreuzfahrtschiff gingen konnten sie noch Kaffe und Kuchen in der “Welshpool Hall” geniessen.

Später am Abend erhielten wir, in einem telefonisches Dankeschön von Bord, die Bestätigung das alle Besucher ihren Landgang sehr genossen hatten. Wie schön!

Part 2 - The Church

The central point in my home town Ahrweiler is 
St. Laurentius Parrish Church.

This church is one of the oldest three nave hall-churches in the area. 

Construction started in 1269 and 

wall paintings and fresco paintings origin from 

the 14. and 15. century. 

As a child it never was boring I used to love just looking at these beautiful windows 

and wall paintings. 

The organ-case was build in 1728. 

Organ concerts are offered regularly , we got to hear a bit today while the congregation slowly emptied the church after mass. 

Unfortunately the original altar was sold may years ago 

and replaced with a more modern piece.

The baptismal font is where I was baptized. 

The hushed atmosphere always had something mystic about it, especial during Christmas time. 

It was a special time for me attending mass here once again.

Die St. Laurentius Pfarrkirche, eine der ältesten Hallenkirchen in Rheinland Pfalz, 

befindet sich auf dem Marktplatz in Ahrweiler. 

Mit ihrem Bau wurde 1269 begonnen. Die Wandmalereien und Fresken stammen aus dem 14. und 15. Jahrhundert. 

Das Orgelgehäuse ist von 1728. 

Regelmässige werden hier den Besuchern Orgelkonzerte angeboten.  

Nach der Messe bekam ich eine kleine Kostprobe zu hören. 

Es ist schon ein tolles Erlebnis wenn die mächtige Musik durch die hohen Räume schallt.

Wenn ich mich recht erinnere bin ich an diesem Taufbecken getauft worden.

Schade ist nur das man den originalen Hauptaltar gegen ein modernes Stück ausgetauscht hat.

Als Kind wurde es mir nie langweilig. Ich habe immer gerne hinauf zu den wunderschönen Fenstern und Wandgemälden geschaut. 

Vor allem in der Weihnachtszeit hat die Kirche eine ganz besondere mystische Atmosphäre.

Es war ein besonderes Erlebnis heute einmal wieder an einer Messe in dieser schönen Kirche teilgenommen zu haben.

My Hometown Ahrweiler (part 1)

I was away for a while to visit my mother and celebrate her 90iest birthday. 

Besides this event family visits were planned and a bit of spare time left for some hiking around the beautiful valley. Spring had come early and everything was so green and flowers were out all around. I had totally forgotten how all these many birds can be heard singing in the tall tree tops and I enjoyed their concerts immensely.

Today I thought I might show you a little about my old hometown Ahrweiler, Germany. 
As you can see (photo above) the oval structure which indicates the old town.
Ahrweiler is located up a side valley off the Rhine. 

Ahrweiler is named after the river “Ahr" on which banks it was founded and the town dates back to the Roman Empire. Excavations  from a roman villa can be found nearby.

Roughly translated it means: “A dwelling (weiler) on the banks of the river Ahr. 
It is called Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler nowadays, 
because the neighbouring spa-town got incorporated. 
But for me it will always stay Ahrweiler.

The Ahr valley “Ahrtal" is famous for its wine production and many attractions and festivals during the year are about wine and wine production.

Nowadays most of the main streets are pedestrian areas lined with boutiques, cafés, restaurants and pubs.

Meine kurze Reise führte mich in meine Heimat nach Deutschland. 

Die Hauptursache für meinen Besuch war der 90. Geburtstag meiner Mutter. Ausserdem waren aber auch Familientreffen geplant. Die übrig geblieben Zeit benutzte ich um ein wenig die Gegend zu durchstreiften.

Der Name ist eigentlich Bad-Neuenahr /Ahrweiler denn schon vor Jahren 

wurden die beiden Städte zusammengelegt. 

Aber für mich wird es immer nur ein Ahrweiler geben.

Heute mal ein wenig über meine Heimatstadt Ahrweiler. 

Die Stadt liegt in einem Seitental westlich des Rheins. Ihr Name könnte ungefähr “Siedlung am Ufer der Ahr” bedeuten. Der Ursprung reicht weit zurück in die Zeit des römischen Reichs. Alte Ausgrabungen aus der Zeit können in einem Museum besichtigt werden.

Das Ahrtal ist für seine Weinproduktion bekannt und viele Events drehen sich deshalb um das Thema Wein und Weinherstellung. Wegen ihres mittelalterlichen Charakters ist Ahrweiler ein sehr beliebtes Urlaubsziel geworden und an den Wochenenden kann es ziemlich voll werden. Der alte Stadtkern mit seinen engen Gassen ist hauptsächlich in Fussgängerzonen umgewandelt. Gemütliche Cafes, Restaurants, Geschäfte und Weinlokale laden zum Verweilen ein. Viele der alten Gebäude sind liebevoll restauriert. Die wunderschöne St. Laurentius Pfarrkirche beherrscht den zentral gelegenen Marktplatz.

Und falls man sich fragt wo denn die Leute sind. In Deutschland muss man extra vorsichtig sein denn es gilt ein strenger Personenschutz.
