You might ask yourself about how we celebrate Christmas down here in the desert southwest.

Lots of good food and being together with friends!

We always have two days to cover. First our German “Heiligabend” on December 24 and

then the American/Canadian Christmas that is celebrated on Christmas Day December 25.

Our tradition has been for years to have a dish for Christmas Eve that origins in Northern Germany.

On December 25 we usually have been out for a potluck with friends and so we did today.

What about gifts/presents. None. Have not done had for years. We have all we need. No extras necessary.

Ihr fragt euch sicher wie wir wohl das Weihnachtsfest hier in Wüste verbringen.

Wir feiern zweimal. Einmal das deutsche Weihnachten am Heiligabend und dann das amerikanische-

kanadische Weihnachten das am ersten Weihnachtstag, Dezember 25 gefeiert wird.

Unsere Tradition für den Heiligabend: J.Peter kocht immer nach dem Rezept seiner Mutter den norddeutschen

Grünkohl mit Kasseler und Mettwurst. Dazu gibt es karamellisierte Bratkartoffel. Einfach vorzubereiten, man 

braucht dann nur noch die Kartoffeln zu braten. 

Am 25. Dezember waren wir immer zu einem Truthahn Potluck (= jeder bringt ein Gericht mit) eingeladen. So auch wieder in

diesem Jahr. Darlene hat, statt einen ganzen Vogel zu braten, vorgeschnittene Putenbrust mit der Füllung aufgerollt 

und in der Soße aufgewärmt. Dazu gab es Kartoffelbrei, Möhren mit Dill, Salat und Süßkartoffel. Zum Nachtisch/Kaffee

selbst gebackenes Gebäck und Schokoladen-Eclairs Dessert. Anschließend wurde das Propan-Lagerfeuer angezündet und 

Spiele gespielt bis die kühl und feucht Abendluft uns nach Hause trieb. Wir bedankten uns bei allen Teilnehmern die dazu beigetragen

haben daß wir wieder ein gelungenes Weihnachtsfest verbuchen konnten.

Wie ist das mit Geschenken? Nix. Schon seit Jahren nicht mehr. Wir haben alles was wir brauchen und die Reise ist Geschenk genug.

Peter has a toothache

We could say that. Every year, closing in on Christmas, Peter has been developing a toothache. And every year he got a tooth pulled.

This year is no exemption. My repeated advices during the year to visit the dentist more regularly were not listened to. 

So, true to tradition the pain started last week. He got an appointment with the dentist in Mexico and they first decided to replace

a crown to ease pressure. X-rays were done before that procedure and no inflammations were found. Home he came

but the pain increased. Should he wait a few days or not? I suggested that he should not, because the office would be closed a whole

week during the Christmas Days and with that level of pain it would be torture for us all. 

We had planned to do a training drive for me with the trailer to the dump station but we re-scheduled that. Another visit to the dentist 

was more important. Thursday morning I dropped him off at the border to Mexico again and used the waiting time to do some shopping in Yuma, AZ.

I could not accompany him because of having Dixie in the car. 

Two hours later, or so, I picked im up again. Another tooth was successfully extracted! More X-rays revealed that the piece of tooth under the crown

had a crack which had gone undetected during the previous visit. "Same procedure as every year, James”, I remarked, reciting Miss Sofie from the movie: Dinner for one.

Luckily dentist work is cheap in Mexico. The bill was “US $60”. X-rays were free. 

Now we can relax - Peter is pain free again. Maybe he will opt for an implant later to close the gap. That could be done for “ US $400”.

Are we through with trouble? Maybe, maybe not.

My hearing aids have decided to stop charging since we came home yesterday and the generator had a hick-up this morning. It started but would not stop.

 Luckily Peter fixed it after taking it apart. A screw in the "on/off" breaker had loosened and fallen out. We had luck. After an hour work it was fixed.

My hearing aids not so. All audiology offices are already closed for the holidays and I have to enjoy deafness for the next two weeks or so. Well, it 

could be worse.

"Die selbe Prozedur we jedes Jahr, James” (Dinner for one)

Man kann mit Recht behaupten.daß J P jedes Jahr um die Weihnachtszeit Zahnschmerzen bekommt und daß jedesmal ein Zahn gezogen werden muß.

Auch dieses Mal war es keine Ausnahme. Meine Ratschläge mal öfter zum Zahnarzt zu gehen werden ja immer in den Wind geschlagen.

Und so kam es dann auch. Vorige Woche hatter er plötzlich Zahnschmerzen die jeden Tag stärker wurden. Ein Besuch beim Zahnarzt in Mexiko wurde 

gebucht und man entfernte eine alte Krone um sie am darauffolgenden Tag mit einer Neuen zu ersetzen. Nur, der Schmerz verschwand nicht, er wurde

schlimmer. Weil wir nicht über die Feiertage mit diesem Problem sitzenbleiben wollten fuhr ich ihn am Donnerstag wieder zur Grenze. Glücklicherweise

bekommt man immer gleich wieder einen neuen Termin. Die Wartezeit habe ich dann ausgenutzt um nach Yuma zum Einkaufen zu fahren. Nach etwa

zwei Stunden konnte ich J-P dann wieder an der Grenze abholen. Ein weiterer Zahn war gezogen worden. Neue Röntgenaufnahmen hatten ergeben daß der

Zahnstumpf einen Riß hatte und raus musste. Glücklicherweise war es erschwinglich, die Behandlung kostete US $ 60. Röntgenaufnahmen sind kostenlos.

Nun war alles wieder in Butter und J-P schmerzfrei. Vielleicht läßt er sich im neuen Jahr ja ein Implant einsetzten. Das würde US$ 400 kosten. Mal sehen.

Sind wir nun endlich durch mit den Problemen? Vielleicht, vielleicht auch nicht.

Heute morgen hatte unser Generator ein kleines Problem. Er startete aber wollte sich nicht mehr ausschalten lassen. Wir hatten Glück, nach einer Stunde hatte

J.P den Fehler gefunden und repariert. Eine Schraube im "An/Aus" Schalter hatte sich gelöst und war rausgefallen.

Meine Hörgeräte haben sich seit gestern geweigert zu laden und alle Betriebe die helfen könnten sind natürlich schon wegen der Feiertage geschlossen.

Da muß ich wohl die nächsten zwei Wochen taub herumlaufen. Das werden ich wohl überleben.

Jetzt donnert es und regnet. Überflutung gewünscht?

as he has done every year.

Tuesday we did dog sitting for a friend who had to go on an errand to Los Angeles, CA. 

Sweet “Emma” had to stay with us. 

She is one of the puppies that were borne

here in the desert last February.

Wednesday, the new slide-out motor arrived and J.P.

started to install it and put things together again.

Today he was trying to get the slide in.

 Since it only pulled in a short distance and askew, 

he took the fuses out alternately and moves it little by little.

of the electronic part and it worked perfectly.

Translation for my German readers

Man hat immer was zu tun. Seit er seine Medikamente nimmt fühlt sich Jens-Peter wieder ganz.

Er hat dann auch gleich den Warmwasserbereiter repariert.

Einen Nachmittag hat er dann auch seine alljährlichen Schmalzplätzchen gebacken, nach Mutter’s Rezept. 

Die Schokoladenvariante ist unser Favorit. 

Deshalb gibt es nur braune Plätzchen. 

Dienstag haben wir auf den Hund eines Freundes aufgepasst. 

J. musste dringend nach Los Angeles fahren. 

Die süße “Emma” hat deshalb

den ganzen Tag mit uns verbracht. 

Sie ist einer der Welpen die im Februar hier 

in der Wüste geboren wurden. (siehe link)

Wir sind spazieren gegangen und abends 

hat sie sich dann an uns gekuschelt und 

ganz geduldig auf die Rückkehr ihres “Herrchens” gewartet. 

Der neue Motor für den Auszug kam auch 

und nachdem J.P. ihn installiert hatte hat er den Auszug auch Schritt für Schritt nach innen ziehen können. 

Jetzt können wir uns wenigstens  mit dem Anhänger auf die Straße wagen falls wir zur Werkstatt müssen. 

Erst einmal aber will er versuchen selbst herauszufinden 

warum die Motoren trotz  einem “reset" 

nicht synchron laufen wollen. 

Aha! Man musste den Auszug 100% reinfahren bevor man

einen "reset" started. 

Nun funktioniert alles wieder einwandfrei!

Early visit to the dentist

Because of the one hour time difference between California and Arizona I got up at 5am on Wednesday to be ready at the dentist for my early appointment.

I also like crossing the border early before the daily crowds of visitors arrive. After noon there usually is a daily line up of returning people. Between midday and 3pm it easily can take up to 2 hours to cross back into the US. So, the trip to Algodones, MX was uneventful. I was at the dentist at 7:30 am and was back on the parking lot by 8:45 am.

Most of the visitors go across for a lot of reasons, often to take advantage of the very reasonable pricing at dental or optometrist clinics. The little town is studded with those offices. Hairdressers and medical/pedi procedures are also popular. And of course to buy cheap booze and medication at the "purple pharmacy".  Knowing how steep the prices are in the US many visitors in the area are keen on taking advantage of the Mexican opportunities.

We have used the dentists since 2005. Some are very good and others are not. One has to do the research and we also talked to fellow campers. That way we found our dentists and optometrist that we are very pleased with. The first years we also went over for browsing and shopping, but since the Covid pandemic we have restricted our visit to the dental office only.

Wegen der verschiedenen Zeitzonen (Kalifornia : Pazifik time /Arizona: Mountain time) mußte ich schon um 5 Uhr aufstehen um rechtzeitig beim Zahnarzt sein zu können. Außerdem ist es immer günstig früh zu kommen und früh zu gehen, denn sonst endet man in der endlosen Warteschlange am Grenzübergang. Bis zu 2 Stunden kann es dauern wenn man zwischen Mittag und 15Uhr die Grenze zurück in die US überqueren will. Viele, meist alte Leute, besuchen Algodones in der Wintersaison. Die kleine Stadt boomed. Überall sieht man Zahnarztpraxen und Brillenläden. Populär sind auch Besuche beim Frisör oder im Hand-und Fußpflegesalon. Am beliebtesten sind aber doch die pharmazeutischen (und alkoholischen) Artikel. Das versteht sich von selbst wenn man das amerikanische Gesundheitssystem mit seinen astronomischen Preisen kennt. Kein Wunder wenn so viele Besucher diese Angebote in Mexiko wahrnehmen. Ich habe selbst keine Fotos gemacht aber ein Link zu einem anderen Blog gibt einen Eindruck wie es da drüben aussieht.

Wir sind 2005 das erste Mal drüben gewesen und haben uns durch Erkundigung schlau gemacht. Seitdem besuchen wir dieselbe Zahnarztpraxis und den selben Augenarzt wenn wir den Winter hier im Süden verbringen. Am Anfang sind wir auch durch die Basare gewandert, aber seit der Korona-Pandemie beschränken wir unseren Besuch auf ein Minimum.

A Winter of Repairs?

Another problem occurred when we readied the camper for take-off. The smallest slide-out in the bedroom did not pull in properly. 

One side pulled, the other did not.

We tried all we could, following online advices of 

re-setting the system, but nothing helped. 

In the end Peter used the "Blueboy" to empty the tanks

 and carried it to the dump station.

Then he took the inside of said slide-out apart and removed the malfunctioning motor.

Soon I will call this season the "winter of repairs". 

Maybe because our camper is getting older and the constant usage is leaving its toll. Who knows?

At least the parts are ordered and Peter will try to fix it. 

We we are able to empty the tanks 

and get fresh water without driving the whole rig into town. 

So - there is no immediate crisis. 

It is just a bit annoying.

Tomorrow I have a dental appointment in Mexico. 

The usual check-up and deep cleaning. Cross fingers. 

So far there has not been a lot of flu/Covid/RSV cases around here 

and I hope to get through this without getting infected. 

Mask wearing during a dental procedure is impossible.

Meine geplante Trainingsfahrt zur Sani-Station musste aufgegeben werden. Einer unserer Auszüge wollte sich nur einseitig bewegen. 

J-Peter mußte den defekten Motor ausbauen und einen neuen bestellen. Das Abwasser konnte aber mit dem "Blueboy" weggefahren werden, also keine Krise. 

Morgen früh habe ich einen Termin beim Mexikanischen Zahnarzt. Die alljährliche Kontrolle und Tiefenreinigung. In Mexiko kostet das nur 1/3 von dem was es in Kanada kostet. 

Ich hoffe daß es ohne  Ansteckung geht. Noch sind hier  in der Gegend nicht viele Grippe/Koronafälle verzeichnet, und während der Behandlung kann man ja keine Maske tragen.

It did not go well with Peter’s “Carpal tunnel syndrome”. 

He could not sleep and I was so worried that I could not sleep either. 

Ever day it was getting worse and In the end we decided 

that it was time to consult to a doctor. 

Our choice could not have been better than

Very efficient and fast. An acute attack 

of osteoarthritis was diagnosed. 

Most likely triggered by the long driving hours. 

Sitting in the same position for hours is not

good for older people.

A 500 piece puzzle helped while waiting 5 hours 

With the medication the swelling and pain is gone and Peter is his old self again.

He is laughing and joking and making a lot of plans. 

That is good. We finally can sleep in peace again. 

I slept 10 hours straight last night. 

Cross fingers that it stays that way.

Today he threw a “doughnut party” for all of our friends 

who helped us through those days.

For the coming week we have planned a driving lesson for me with the trailer - going the 8 miles to the

dump station to clear out the tanks and get fresh water. 

That is not the biggest problem. 

The worst will

be to back the rig into our spot. It is not a “pull-through”. 

We will see how it goes.

Es ging dann doch nicht so gut mit JPeter’s “Sehnenscheidenentzündung”. Es wurde von Tag zu Tag schlimmer und wir beide konnten nicht mehr schlafen. 

Er nicht wegen der Schmerzen, und ich nicht weil ich 

mir grosse Sorgen machte.

Im Endeffekt mussten wir das Handtuch werfen 

und einen Arzt konsultieren. 

Blutabnahme, Röntgenaufnahme und 

Ultrasound zeigten keine auffälligen Befunde. 

Es wurde als akuter Anfall von Arthrose eingestuft. 

Die verschriebenen Medikamente haben die Schwellungen 

und den Schmerz dann schnell beseitigt 

und heute war JPeter wieder ganz der Alte. 

Endlich konnten wir wieder durchschlafen.

Hoffentlich bleibt das so.  

In seiner Begeisterung hat JPeter dann auch gleich 

eine Doughnutparty veranstaltet. 

Alle unsere Freunde waren eingeladen 

und er bedankte sich bei ihnen für ihre Hilfeleistungen. 

Z.B. einer für uns den Generator anwerfen 

weil das Ziehen der Startschnur für 

mich zu anstrengend war.

Für die nächste Woche 

ist für mich eine Übungsfahrt angesagt. 

Ich soll das ganze Gespann 12 km zu Sani-Station

fahren, Abwasser entleeren und Frischwasser auffüllen. 

Das ist nicht das Schwierigste. 

Aber am Ende kommt dann  

rückwärts einparken in unseren Stellplatz. 

Da wird es sich zeigen….
