Problems Fixed!

Time goes by with something to do every day.

The medication is working and Peter feels well again.

So he could repair the warm water heater after the parts arrived in the mail

One afternoon Peter baked his mom’s Christmas cookies,
as he has done every year.
Cookie dough

Northern German Lard cookies.
Usually there are black and white ones,
but we like the chocolate ones best.
No white ones baked.

Tuesday we did dog sitting for a friend who had to go on an errand to Los Angeles, CA.
Sweet “Emma” had to stay with us.

She is one of the puppies that were borne
here in the desert last February.

We did walks
Walking with Dixie and Emma

and she cuddled up to us waiting patiently
for the return of her daddy.
Wednesday, the new slide-out motor arrived and J.P.

New motor for the Swintec slideout system

started to install it and put things together again.
Work in progress

Today he was trying to get the slide in.
Since it only pulled in a short distance and askew,
he took the fuses out alternately and moves it little by little.
Slide in the front nearly all in again

After the slide was fully inside Peter did a "reset"
of the electronic part and it worked perfectly.
The slide had to be 100% inside before the "reset".
Slide pulled all in

Problems fixed!!! Great!
We can celebrate!

Aha! Man musste den Auszug 100% reinfahren bevor man
einen "reset" started.
Nun funktioniert alles wieder einwandfrei!

A Winter of Repairs?

My planned training drive to the dump station with the rig
was cancelled.
Another problem occurred when we readied the camper for take-off. The smallest slide-out in the bedroom did not pull in properly.
One side pulled, the other did not.
Small slide-out stuck, Peter trying to fix it

We tried all we could, following online advices of

re-setting the system, but nothing helped.

In the end Peter used the "Blueboy" to empty the tanks

and carried it to the dump station.

Portable waste water container, aka "Blueboy"

Then he took the inside of said slide-out apart and removed the malfunctioning motor.

Taking off the closet doors to get behind the wall where the slide's motor sits

Soon I will call this season the "winter of repairs".

Maybe because our camper is getting older and the constant usage is leaving its toll. Who knows?

The culprit - defect motor

At least the parts are ordered and Peter will try to fix it.
We we are able to empty the tanks
and get fresh water without driving the whole rig into town.
So - there is no immediate crisis.
It is just a bit annoying.

Tomorrow I have a dental appointment in Mexico.

The usual check-up and deep cleaning. Cross fingers.

So far there has not been a lot of flu/Covid/RSV cases around here

and I hope to get through this without getting infected.

Mask wearing during a dental procedure is impossible.

The Drama Continues

The first night here in the desert we slept like the dead. No noise, no light pollution. The plan was to go to Ajo, AZ and do laundry, but we decided just to hang out with our friends and have a good day's rest. Which we did.

Coffeebreak, hanging out with friends

Today, the second day, we packed up everything we needed for the trip to town and - got no-where. We could not believe it, but the gear shift stick was loose again. And this time Peter was unable to fix it.
Trying to get it into neutral gear

And, while underneath the van, he found the ugly truth:
the GMC repair shop in Freehold, NJ had only taken our payment but not repaired the damaged cable.
The old bushing, for which Peter had used copper wire to keep it in position, was still there.
We had trusted those guys and they had fooled us.
We will definitely update our review.
The van in the process of getting towed away

In the end we had to call a towing company and the van got towed to the nearby town Ajo, AZ.
The local repair shop called us back only to tell us:
that parts were not available in Arizona right now, they have to be ordered and shipped from out of state. And - there is a small leak in the water pump. Bummer.
Now we are stuck here at least until the end of next week.

The good thing is that our friends had planned to stay here until the end of November and they offered to help us getting around to town if would we need anything.

The only thing I can do is go birding

Phainopepla (Silk Flycatcher)

and watch the beautiful sunsets.

Die GMC Werkstatt in New Jersey hatte uns angeschmiert.

A Start With lots of Hurdles

It is this time of the year. We are again bound for California.

We left home on Friday, November 3 and had no trouble reaching our first spot where we had planned to stay over night.

Ready to move

A relatively calm place behind a liquor store close to the border of New Hampshire. After an uneventful night we started out early at sunrise.

But then things started to happen. On our lunch stop Peter found the coffee machine on the floor in shards. I had forgotten to stow it away before we started out this morning.

Some of the glass was pulled into the slideout and we were afraid it would damage the tracks. But it was just a fuse that blew when the slide was pulled out.

Trying to fix the problem

After lunch, the next thing occurred: the van would not go into gear. The shift stick was moving loosely without snapping into R, N or D. Peter called our mechanic and then crawled under the van to wriggle some connections. That did the trick. The gear stick started to work again and we went on.

Our goal for the next night was a Walmart in Freehold, New Jersey. So far, so good. Upon reaching Frehold we pulled into a gas station to fill the tank. Suddenly the dashboard light came on with a warning:

“motor overheating” and the motor stuttered. What now? We sat at the pump for a while, Peter got coolant. After the motor had cooled a little we decided to go on. Walmart was just a mile away.

Again: the gear stick was free moving. Ugh. Back under the van and wriggle the cables. Luckily it worked and a few minutes later we limped onto the parking lot for the night. The motor was hot again.

Bubbles coming up from the cooler system

Sunday morning, of course no repair shop open, Peter tried to fix the problem. More coolant was filled in, and this time a lot of air bubbled out of the filling neck until the liquid suddenly disappeared into the system. He drove the van for a while around the area and the temperature stayed in the normal range.
Parked on Walmart parking lot, checking the engine

Then he tried to fixe the problem with the gear shift stick. Not a chance.

We had to wait until Monday morning. Luckily, all this happened here and not along a busy highway or interstate. The parking lot was very quiet during the night and a safe place to be.

Today, Monday, Peter drove the van to a Chevrolet dealer/repair shop. We had found out it was just over a mile away. They were extremely helpful there after he told them our problems. A part was picked up 30 miles away and repair was done quickly. They changed the whole connecting cables and a plate attached to the automatic transmission where the cable was attached to. That plate was totally worn off and the reason for the reoccurring glitches.

Finally, after a day and a half, we were back on the road again and headed towards Cape May to catch the 6 pm ferry to Port Lewes in Delaware.

Getting the very last spot on the ferry to Lewes, DE
This time we had luck with us. The 3:30 pm ferry had not departed yet, and lo-and-behold they had one open spot left. After a quick sniffer dog check for drugs and explosives we were waved onboard and the ramp went up. We were on our way.

Now we are parked on the ferry’s parking area in Lewes, DE until tomorrow morning. A friendly guard told us that we should not be surprised: there were “ghosts” observed around here. The parking lot is a former graveyard where sailors were laid to rest.

Oh well, we will survive that too, I guess.

Marker telling about the cemetery

Tomorrow we will be heading on to somewhere in South Carolina, trying to reach the I-20 that will lead us westward.

Dixie walking around and checking out the area.

Translation for my German readers:
