You might ask yourself about how we celebrate Christmas down here in the desert southwest.

Lots of good food and being together with friends!

We always have two days to cover. First our German “Heiligabend” on December 24 and

then the American/Canadian Christmas that is celebrated on Christmas Day December 25.

Our tradition has been for years to have a dish for Christmas Eve that origins in Northern Germany.

Easy to prepare the day before and only the potatoes have to 

be browned in the evening. 

On December 25 we usually have been out for a potluck with friends and so we did today.

Darlene had a great idea about rolling the stuffing into pre-cut turkey slices and just warming them up in the sauce.

Afterward Ron started the propane fire

the dampness put an end to our feast.

What about gifts/presents. None. Have not done had for years. We have all we need. No extras necessary.

Translation for my German readers

Ihr fragt euch sicher wie wir wohl das Weihnachtsfest hier in Wüste verbringen.

Wir feiern zweimal. Einmal das deutsche Weihnachten am Heiligabend und dann das amerikanische-

kanadische Weihnachten das am ersten Weihnachtstag, Dezember 25 gefeiert wird.

Unsere Tradition für den Heiligabend: J.Peter kocht immer nach dem Rezept seiner Mutter den norddeutschen

Grünkohl mit Kasseler und Mettwurst. Dazu gibt es karamellisierte Bratkartoffel. Einfach vorzubereiten, man 

braucht dann nur noch die Kartoffeln zu braten. 

Am 25. Dezember waren wir immer zu einem Truthahn Potluck (= jeder bringt ein Gericht mit) eingeladen. So auch wieder in

diesem Jahr. Darlene hat, statt einen ganzen Vogel zu braten, vorgeschnittene Putenbrust mit der Füllung aufgerollt 

und in der Soße aufgewärmt. Dazu gab es Kartoffelbrei, Möhren mit Dill, Salat und Süßkartoffel. Zum Nachtisch/Kaffee

selbst gebackenes Gebäck und Schokoladen-Eclairs Dessert. Anschließend wurde das Propan-Lagerfeuer angezündet und 

Spiele gespielt bis die kühl und feucht Abendluft uns nach Hause trieb. Wir bedankten uns bei allen Teilnehmern die dazu beigetragen

haben daß wir wieder ein gelungenes Weihnachtsfest verbuchen konnten.

Wie ist das mit Geschenken? Nix. Schon seit Jahren nicht mehr. Wir haben alles was wir brauchen und die Reise ist Geschenk genug.

5 Steps to the reach the goal!

Step 1:

The search is on.

A tree had to be  found!

So many trees around, so hard to choose.

Of course, one came down eventually,

was hauled home and stored in the greenhouse for a few weeks.

Step 2:

Construction zone

Peter (hubby) had to do some acrobatics to get the tree up.

Tradition demands it

because

he has a degree in upholstering/interior decoration.

So, there is no question here.

My job will be to take it down - the dirt job

because 

women can handle the cleaning better than men!

Simple logic

all well balanced on decades of experience.

Step 3:

Photo session

The obligatory dog-with-Santa-hat photo had to be taken too,

although Dixie did not appreciate the session.

She looked more like: "WT# = What is going on here"?

(We might try again next year.)

 It worked better for her 

just to be her own on the floor.

Step 4: 

Appreciation: 

The tree is up, it looks radiant and pretty. 

Everyone is happy.

(a promise: next year I will definitely have new curtains or a different sofa set )

Step 5:

We are ready!

Es sind eigentlich nur 5 Schritte zum Ziel.

Erst (1) wird der Baum gesucht, gefunden und nach Hause geschleppt, 

dann  (2) klettert der Ehemann auf die Möbel um ihn aufzustellen.

Es ist eine Tradition in diesem Haushalt dass er den Baum auch schmückt, hat er

doch eine Raumaustatterausbildung.

Meine Arbeit wird das Demontieren sein, die Dreckarbeit. 

 Frauen werden mit solchen Situationen besser fertig. 

Einfach logisch!

Alles begründet auf jahrelanger Erfahrung.

Schritt Nr.3 ist die obligatorische Fotosstunde mit dem Hund. 

Dixie sieht allerdings nicht besonders begeistert aus. 

Aber was noch nicht ist kann noch werden. 

Nr 4 ist dann die Begutachtung der erbrachten Leistung.

Sieht doch alles ganz manierlich aus!

(Obwohl ich gerne andere Gardinen oder Polstermöbel hätte)

Der letzte Schritt, Nr 5 bringt uns zum Ziel.
