Early April at Home

Nearly a three weeks home already!
Head Harbour Lightstation  (East Quoddy Light)

There we are with all our vehicles! Trailer, motorhome, vans and cars! We are jokingly saying that our property more and more looks like a sales lot for cars.
Our car park

The one thing that is missing when returning home this early in the spring is: warm and sunny weather.
View towards "Friar" below Friar's Head

That was what we are missing most. This spring it seems exceptional cold and rainy.
Days on end we experience sleet, rain and deep hanging clouds.

After an overnight snow storm

We even got a late snowstorm.
Overlooking the water

Rolling surf on Herring Cove Beach

Everything looked more like Christmas than Easter.
Dixie waiting for us behind the snow-covered beach grass

The soil is very saturated and it is hard to find a dry spot to park. Neither can we work in the yard or vegetable garden. Everything has to wait.

The word is out that maybe after Easter the weather will turn and finally will warm up.
What else is happening?

The border crossings are a bit different with all these new tariffs now. We mostly

drive an hour to mainland Canada to go for shopping even after we got an exemption from tariffs for necessary grocery items because of our island situation. The dollar exchange rate is not in favour for shopping in the US either. Every item is about 40-50% more expensive. Our solution is that we go less frequent and prefer shopping in Canada.

How the border situation will impact the coming tourist season is open for speculation. Will guest come or will they stay away because of the border situation. We will see.

But first
Happy Easter!

Crocus, the only sign of spring for now

Erst einmal
Frohe Ostern!

On the Road again - Day 5 / 6

Yesterday we had such a bad storm that we were safely parked in a state park.

Morning walk before it got too windy

By mid afternoon the wind was shaking the trees around us and rattling in the straps that are ankering down our solar panels down on the roof. The only thing we could do was staying inside and waiting for the storm to move on.

The big storm system (we were left (west) of Wichita)

Today was much better, still breezy though. In the kitchen department a pork loin was sizzling in the oven. Provision for the coming days.

Pork loin steak is ready

While we are traveling we always cook our meals ourselves. We rarely went out dining before Covid and now visit restaurants even less. Those ready seasoned pork loins are really good and easy to cook. One can get a pound for $7 and it will be enough for 4 meals. I cooked carrots and leeks as well and froze them in portions. That way dinner will be prepared within 30 minutes, the time it takes to boil potatoes. While being busy in the kitchen Peter fixed some problems outside. He repaired one of the van's burned out head lights and changed the other one as well. Then he repaired the choke of our generator. It had been a problem lately to get the thing started.
Now we are all ready to roll out early tomorrow morning.

Enjoying the sunshine

Finally - Spring again!

We coped and hoped
and got used to having the Covid19 threat around.
Luckily we live in an area where we seem to be relatively safe and
also our province was very good at handling the situation, so far.
What did we do with all that time on our hands?
First the isolation.
We stayed at home and just gave Dixie her daily walks.
There are so many nice trails and beaches where
you rarely meet anybody.
Just us and nature.

Bald Eagle
(Weisskopfadler)
So,
 that was not bad.
I started my tomatoes in early March and
Peter layed the foundation for a new greenhouse.
Our first one turned out to be too small after all.
Always something to do.
Inside he finished up renovating one upstairs bedroom.
No photos yet it is now a chaos again because we
move everything out of the other bedroom to
do that as well. Shall use the time we have.

Last time I was complaining about no birds at the feeders
all winter long.
Northern Cardinal
(Rotkardinal)
Well, finally they came all back.
Chestnut-sided Warbler

More and more arrivedevery day as the migrants
returned to their breeding areas again.

It is Spring time.

Jedenfalss bisher.

Signs of Spring

Grey days are here again. Yesterdays sunshine has turned into to cool cloudy weather.
That's also part of spring time.
On my early doggie walk I am aways looking for photo motives.
This morning there were several American Crows making a lot of noise.
Something had disturbed their peace.
A immature Bald Eagle sitting in a tree by the waterside.
A few steps further the buildings and barges
are mirroring themselves in the motionless water.
For ones there is no wind at all.
There is no activity on the bay.
A lone Red-breasted Merganser cruising on the water.
A Song Sparrow on the wire.
At home the feeders were crowed.
Some of the American Goldfinches have already
turned into their summer plumage.
Purple Finches and
a Male Northern Cardinal are always
outstanding in their red outfit.
And under the old apple tree I find
 the more signs of spring.
Some crocus flowers have finally opened.

First days of March

The month of March had planned quite an impressive entrance.
Luckily for us, the storm predicted did not get that bad
up here in our area.
The Temperatures were around +5C (41F)
Though, the strong north-easterly winds accompanied with a full moon
brought quite a surf.
Off course we had to go and see. Impressive.
We were not able to access the beach but I walked down
the stairs a bit to get a closer look.
And then, after 6 hours everything was "back to normal"
High tide vs low tide at..
Herring Cove Beach
Campobello Island, NB

At home the birds around the feeders
seemed imperturbed.

A rare guest at our house

After a foggy day the sun finally decided
to show itself for a few hours.
We enjoyed sitting on the porch and look at the view.
For a quite a while we sat
and listened to a flute-like song in the distance.
Suddenly there was a red flutter in our apple tree.
Behold - a Northern Cardinal was visiting us!

I have not been lucky with
getting a good shot of these shy birds.
Within seconds it took off again.
So beautiful.
What a treat!
Good to know that they are around.

Auntie's Summary
