Ohio-New York and the New England states

After two more days and 18 hours and 960 mi (1544 km) driving 

we finally made it to our last stop before home.

After Mansfield OH we stayed in another Walmart near Oneida, NY for the night into Wednesday

and started very early on Wednesday morning.

The weather stayed nice and dry, the wind light.

First we decided to just go until we reached Maine.

Gardiner Service Plaza was the place we wanted to stay for the night.

But when we got there it was only another 2 hours up to Bangor and Peter felt that 

he could do these last miles as well. 

That way it would only be 3 more hours to home on Thursday.

At 5pm after a long day on the road we reached Dysart's Truck Stop 

just south of Bangor ME.

  It was packed but we found a spot to squeeze in for the night.

Der Marathon is bald zu Ende. Nach zwei Tagen, 18 Stunden und 1544 km sind wir nun an unserem letzten Rastplatz angekommen. Morgen sind es nur noch 3 Stunden bis nach Hause. 

Wir fuhren von Ohio durch die Staaten New Your, Massachusetts, New Hampshire nach Maine. Dort wollten wir eigentlich auf einer Service Station übernachten. Aber dann waren es nur noch 2 weitere Stunden Fahrt bis Bangor und JP fühlte sich noch frisch genug um auch diese Kilometer noch hinter sich zu bringen. Nun stehen wir auf Dysarts Truck Stop und sind reif für die Flohkiste. Morgen werden wir endlich wieder zuhause sein. 

Kansas to Illinois, a two days ride

From Meade, KS we decided run away from a new incoming wind system. 

When we started out early in the morning it was still calm but 

by noon it would be too windy to drive.

The highway led us through many sleepy towns

until we found a rest are an hour before reaching the border to Missouri.

It was a noisy night because the parking lot was packed with semi trucks.

Many of them idling all night long.

In the morning Peter realized that one of the double tires was nearly flat.

Luckily we have our own air compressor and could inflate it.

In the morning we made it through Kansas City, KS 

into Kansas City, MO without problems. Sunday morning

 Somewhere on a Truck Stop we checked on the tire and yes, 

it had again lost pressure. That will have to be fixed asap!

On we went, surrounded by more green fields and trees.

We definitely left behind for good the wide open desert landscape 

and the rolling prairie.

Some areas were burnt black.

Prescribed grassland burning is still a practice around here.

The interstate was in parts in very bad shape. Lots 

of potholes on the right side of the lane. 

We also observed

that all roadwork areas were stopped, half finished, abandoned and

another road work area left deserted

most machineries withdrawn. Safety cones uselessly flying around on the ground.

Most likely because 

the new US government withdrew all federal fundings. 

 I fear that will be the future - no further road maintenance.

and entered the state Illinois. 

It must have rained a lot here. Water was standing on the fields.

A couple of hours later we reached our

where we had stayed overnight on a Walmart 

once before in November 2011.

We made it and the bad weather area that followed us 

will have moved on tomorrow morning.

Sehr früh am Morgen verließen wir den Ort Meade in der Hoffnung daß wir

dem Tiefdrucksystem entkommen würden. Es würde uns sonst drei Tage lang

hier festhalten. Wir durchfuhren trockenes Ranchland, kleine Städte,

nach und nach verschwand die wellige Prairie und wir sahen wintergraue 

Felder und mehr und mehr Bäume. 

Kurz vor Kansas City fanden wir einen Rastplatz für die Nacht.

Es wurde ziemlich laut, alles war vollgestopft mit Lastwagen die ihre Motoren die 

ganz Nacht über im Leerlauf ließen. 

Am Morgen fanden wir dann heraus daß einer der Doppelreifen fast die ganz Luft verloren hatte.

Glücklicherweise haben wir ja einen eigenen Kompressor und so konnte JP ihn

schnell wieder aufpumpen. Aber es machte uns Sorgen.

Östlich von Kansas City kamen wir dann nach Missouri hinein.

Ein paar Stunden später war der Luftdruck im Reifen schon wieder gesunken. Mist.

Das müssen wir dringend in Ordnung bringen! Aber heute war Sonntag 

und da sind alle Betriebe geschlossen.

Am frühen Nachmittag überquerten wir die Flüsse Missouri und Mississippi und

ein paar Stunden später erreichten wir unser heutiges Ziel: Vandalia in Illinois.

Hier haben wir schon einmal in 2011 die Nacht verbracht. 

Morgen früh wird das Schlechtwettergebiet dann über uns hinweg gezogen sein 

und für die nächsten Tage ist kein Starkwind angekündigt. 

Mal sehen wie weit wir morgen kommen.

The landscape was flat pairie farmland.

Many old farm houses along the road seem to be abandoned.

People nowadays tend to move to small town or cities 

where there is more work to find.

employs over 4000 people alone.

They raise and process chicken and pork.

Another produces potatoes, melons, wheat and more.

What else can one do during a long ride?

The newly paved road was looking like a runway to me:

Finally we arrived at our destination: Meade KS

to Meade, Kansas

Here will will stay the night in a small park, the same

we stayed last spring on our way home.

Ein weiterer Tag quer durchs Land liegt hinter uns. 

Wir passierten Santa Rosa und Tucumcari 

um von der interstate 40 auf den Highway 54 weiter nach Norden zu fahren. 

Dabei kamen wir doch einen Teil von Texas, Oklahoma und endeten in Kansas. 

Die Landschaft war weiterhin flach aber die trockene Mesa 

wurde von trockenem Ackerland abgelöst. 

Hier kann man nur mit Bewässerung Landwirtschaft betreiben. 

Viele alte Farmen sind von großen Agro-Konzernen aufgekauft worden. 

Einer der Goßen beschäftigt 4000 Angestellte alleine in einer der kleinen 

Städtchen die wir durchfuhren. Sie verarbeiten Hühner- und Schweineprodukte. 

Endlose Containerzüge begleiteten uns auf unserer Fahrt. 

Die rosafarbenen sind von einer Japanischen Frachtgesellschaft. 

Was man während der Fahrt nicht alles im Internet lesen kann! 

Auf der frisch geteerten "Landebahn" fuhren wir in das kleine Dorf Meade ein. 

Hier haben wir im letzten Frühjahr auch schon übernachtet. 

Dixie war rollte sich minutenlang im trockenen Wintergras. 

Egal! Es war das erste Gras nach langen Monaten in der Wüste. 

Ein paar Löwenzahnblüten zeigen daß der Frühling nicht mehr weit sein kann.

After sunrise the temperatures were down to -7 C (19.4 F) and I had 

to bundle up before my morning walk with Dixie.

It was a short one only and we both were grateful to be back 

into the warmth of the motorhome.

After breakfast we started on our next leg towards the East 

driving for hours over the mesa.

Operation in 1962 and closed in 2009 after the coal reserves of the McKinley Mine east of

Many times we drove by Native American Sales stations where one can buy jewelries, T-shirt, 

blankets and much more.

Sometimes one gets scared for a second when a truck is towed backwards.

It looks like they are driving right at us.

The weather was cooperative with nearly no wind until early afternoon, then gradually strengtheningup to 29kmh (18mph) pushing us along from West.

Around 3pm (3:00) we reached Albuquerque, NM 

Traffic was light and continued on another hour towards Santa Rosa. 

Our plan was to stay overnight at Santa Rosa State Park but when we saw this

Internet connection is low, but after 6 hours diving and 380 miles

who cares.

Die Nacht war doch ziemlich kalt. Am Morgen waren es nur noch -7 Grad.

Da mußte ich mich warm anziehen um mit Dixie Gassie zu gehen.

Nach dem Frühstück ging es gleich wieder los. Der Wind war schwach bis mässig und 

am späten Nachmittag fanden wir einen Rastplatz kurz vor Santa Rosa, NM (Neu Mexiko).

Hier werden wir die nächste Nacht verbringen.

Interessantes entlang der Interstate: Das niedergelegte Cholla Kohlekraftwerk, 

Indianische Verkausläden und ein riesiges Magmarfeld. 

Ein abgeschleppter Lastzug sah aus wie ein Geisterfahrer. ;)

Ansonsten: viel Aussicht und eine endlos gerade Straße.

6 Stdn- 611km, das reicht.

October is Travel time

 The summer was busy and the weeks just flew by. 

October has arrived and we had decided to travel earlier than usual. 

We left home on then 19th and drove with van and trailer for 4 days to reach Colorado before the 25th.

 New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. In Ohio and Kansas the landscape 

was more flat with wide open blue sky.

This time we changed who was driving. First time for me to drive van and trailer 

for longer stretches. It came handy when JP suddenly got sick.

We stayed a few times at a motel and ate in fast food joints and there, somewhere along the road, I think we picked up a Covid virus. 

At least that we came down with. J.P first and I three days later. Ugh! 

Why did we rush to fast to Colorado?

Because JP had found something he REALLY needed to have. ;) A new toy.

Dieses Mal sind wir ein paar Wochen früher unterwegs. Am 19 Oktober ging es schon los.

Wunderschöne Herbstfarben säumten die Straßen in Maine und Pennsylvania.

In Ohio und vor allem Kansas wurde die Landschaft flach.

Wir erreichten Colorado am 24. Oktober. 

Warum?

Weil JP sich unbedingt ein neues Spielzeug besorgen wollte. 

Da wartete es auf uns.

Auf dem Hinweg hatten wir ein paar Übernachtungen im Motel und wir

aßen in Fast-Food Restaurants.

Da haben wir uns irgendwo dann leider auch einen neuen COVID Virus eingefangen. 

Ein Glück daß ich dieses Mal auch den Van und Anhänger gefahren haben.

So konnte ich am Steuer sitzen währen JP den ersten Fieberanfall hatte.

Drei Tage später war ich an der Reihe. 

Und deshalb mach ich jetzt auch Schluß für heute.

Bin noch nicht wieder ganz auf dem Damm. 

Es wird noch ein paar Tage dauern.
