Kansas to Illinois, a two days ride

From Meade, KS we decided run away from a new incoming wind system.
When we started out early in the morning it was still calm but
by noon it would be too windy to drive.

wide open cattle ranch land

No time for sightseeing at all. The landscape changed from prairie ranch land

small farms dotted the area

to fields and trees started to line the roads.
view of one small town along how 54/400 eastbound

The highway led us through many sleepy towns
Lots of winding Highways all day long

on Highway 35

until we found a rest are an hour before reaching the border to Missouri.
It was a noisy night because the parking lot was packed with semi trucks.
Many of them idling all night long.

In the morning Peter realized that one of the double tires was nearly flat.
Luckily we have our own air compressor and could inflate it.

grey and cool morning

In the morning we made it through Kansas City, KS

into Kansas City, MO without problems. Sunday morning
traffic was light.

Peter inflating a faulty tire

Somewhere on a Truck Stop we checked on the tire and yes,
it had again lost pressure. That will have to be fixed asap!

On we went, surrounded by more green fields and trees.

We definitely left behind for good the wide open desert landscape
and the rolling prairie.

on I-70 eastbound

Some areas were burnt black.

burned grassland

Prescribed grassland burning is still a practice around here.

The interstate was in parts in very bad shape. Lots
of potholes on the right side of the lane.
We also observed

abandoned road work

that all roadwork areas were stopped, half finished, abandoned and

another road work area left deserted

most machineries withdrawn. Safety cones uselessly flying around on the ground.
Most likely because
the new US government withdrew all federal fundings.

I fear that will be the future - no further road maintenance.

Early in the afternoon we crossed the rivers Missouri

crossing Missouri River

 and Mississippi

Mississippi River

and entered the state Illinois.

It must have rained a lot here. Water was standing on the fields.
A couple of hours later we reached our

rain soaked fields

destination for today - Vandalia, IL
where we had stayed overnight on a Walmart
once before in November 2011.

We made it and the bad weather area that followed us
will have moved on tomorrow morning.

Santa Rosa NM to Meade KS

  Another day with many miles.
(sorry for some photos, all taken through dirty windows)
We passed through Santa Rosa, NM
and Tucumcari, NM
traffic on I-40

and continued on Hgw 54, first into Texas
cattle on green grass, a rare view
then through a part of Oklahoma
memories from another time

until we finally reached Kansas.

The landscape was flat pairie farmland.
Many old farm houses along the road seem to be abandoned.
People nowadays tend to move to small town or cities
where there is more work to find.

busy meat processing plant

For example, one of the largest agribusiness
employs over 4000 people alone.
They raise and process chicken and pork.
Another produces potatoes, melons, wheat and more.

mile long cargo train

Along the road seemingly endless containers were
transported by rail.

Japanese overseas containers

The pink ones are owned by a Japanese Company.
All of this information is readily available on the internet.
What else can one do during a long ride?

The newly paved road was looking like a runway to me:
 "coming in for landing"

Finally we arrived at our destination: Meade KS
to Meade, Kansas

Here will will stay the night in a small park, the same
we stayed last spring on our way home.

City Park

Dixie enjoyed the feeling of grass for the first time since
October

Dixie enjoying grass

She happily rolled around until she was totally covered
with dead old grass and dirt.
She was so happy!

no problem that is bone dry

First dandelions are a sign of spring is on its way.

On the Road again - Day 4

Change of plans. This morning when I returned with Dixie from my morning walk J.Peter declared that he wanted to go on nonetheless.

Flat landscape in Kansas

And so we did. It was a slow go because we got to battle with strong head wind.
The fuel milage took a nosedive.
The air was hazy from all the fields famers in Kansas are used to burn every spring.

Burned field

Maybe the idea had not been the best anyway.

Heavy smoke made the air hazy

Soon we left the open grassland behind and there were trees growing and rivers flowing again.
Definitely a sign that we were heading eastward.

Finally: trees and rivers changing the landscape

By early afternoon we reached the goal : Cheney State Park , KS situated at the western shores of a big man made lake.

Our spot in Cheney State Park, KS

There are several campgrounds to choose from and we found an ideal spot with electricity between rows of juniper trees which can protect us from the elements, we hope.
The weather forecast for tomorrow, Saturday, predicts 60 mph (90 kmh) and more wind gusts.
And Sunday will still be windy day. Therefore we booked us in for 3 nights.
There are not many campers around, yet but hey are waiting for the crowds to arrive soon,
those who want to watch Mondays solar eclipse from an open space in the countryside.

View over the lake (15 square miles, ca 39 km2)

At the lake the wind was pushing the water far out already.

Dixie cooling her paws in the lake water

Dixie loved it. She craves to be outside for most of the day
and traveling is not her favourite thing to do.

Looking over the water

Our cellphone connection is a bit patchy out here and I might not post again
until Monday, but we will see how it goes.
The park should have WiFi, though.

Red-bellied Woodpecker, (Carolinaspecht)

By now we have traveled about 1/3 of the whole stretch.

Cheney State Park, westlich von Wichita, KS.
Mal sehen.
