A Wild Dash Out Of The Snow

We escaped the Texas winter storm!

We did, because, when we checked on the weather early in the morning, we discovered there was a two hours window to get out ...

The weather radar when we started out

and away before the storm pounced on the area with heavy snow and wind.

The weather radar when we were out of the area

Within half an hour we were packed and on the road.
Sleet was coming down already and within 15 minutes it was snowing heavily.
Despite temperatures of +2 C (36F)
wet snow accumulated on the road to a nasty slush.

The window wishers got caked with frozen snow.
Should we take the next exit and return to Balmorhea TX?
Peter decided not to, because the road cameras showed bare roads (green)
just an hour ahead of us.
Checking back on the area around Balmorhea
we saw the roads were “orange” (difficult driving) and the weather forecast said +1 C, (33F), 90% snow accumulating 10-30cm (8 to 10 inch).

 Fortunately we got some help.
Two semi-trailers, driving ahead of us,
squished the the slush out of the way with their big tires.
The weather forecast and road map were right.
The bad driving took about a hour until Van Horn, TX ...
then the snow went over into rain. After that we had only sleet, in El Paso, TX it still rained

snow was only visible on the mountain tops.

Reaching Las Cruces NM the weather was partly cloudy, dry and + 12C (53.6 F) mild.

We had made it!

When we looked around at the familiar scenery, driving I-10 west, we smiled.
That's what we had been looking forward to!
Blue sky, fluffy clouds and wide open spaces.
We drove on until an hour before sunset.

Escaped The Rain (for now)

The morning was again - gloomy and damp.
Dixie looked very unhappy,
because, repeatedly I had to remove those nasty
stickers from her paws and legs.
I hate those burrs!

Mud around the trailer
The tires were caked with mud,

as where our shoes when we were ready for take off.
Nearby a small, dripping wet Roadrunner was bidding us "farewell".

The last hinder was the mud pool at the exit of Falcon County Park
Then followed hours of driving in a seemingly never ending drizzle.
Finally, after five hours driving, west of Del Rio, TX,
the clouds lifted and we reached the first dry roads.
What a relief, and our mood lifted considerably.
An hour later we turned into Seminole Canyon State Park for the night.
We were very lucky because the place was packed.
Thanksgiving visitors had claimed nearly all spaces.
But we got one of the last available spots.
Internet connection is phenomenal fast, compared to home.
On my walk around the perimeter I found these tiny desert flowers
brightening an otherwise gray day.
A Meadowlark was watching us strolling by.
I hope I'll get time to do the short bird walk nearby early in the morning.
Eastern Meadowlark

Unfortunately, there is not enough time planned to explore this park further.
We want to get west before the weather changes again.
So far, we had only little wind and no frost.

Day 4 - snow and rain

The I-80 brought us first further north and west

before we could turn down on I-70 in a more southwesterly direction.

And, of course, another weather system approached.

Typical for the area south of the Great Lakes at this time of the year.

Another Canadian cold front with snow and strong winds.

At times there was nearly white-out conditions.

And needless to say, people were driving as if it was the nicest summertime weather.

No time for taking photos, my attention was on the road.

Since we headed into the system it passed overhead pretty quickly

and after four hours precipitation went over

into drizzle and the snowy fields were soon green again.

But this kind of weather, and lots of road construction sides,

hampered our speed and we did not reach St. Louis, MO as planned.

At Terre-Haute, IN we called it a day and turned into an older campground for the night.

Within an hour after we had checked in it was already dark.

I am not complaining because tonight we are protected
from the wind among tall trees, have power and plenty of hot water.
Such luxury.
Another bonus: we will be driving around St. Louis in daylight and after a good nights sleep.
Warmer day temperatures are also beaconing.

Arctic - Ice

So far winter was relatively easygoing,
but January has now dealt us the worst
weather one can get.

ICE

First it started out snowing heavily.
That's ok, we can deal with that.
Shovelling dry fluffy snow is ok.
I have no problem with that.

But - no. It didn't stop there.

By late afternoon temperatures rose to above freezing
and the snow turned into rain.

Instantly flash freeze turned everything into a mess.
Shovelling half frozen concrete mush
soon became impossible.
Coat, mittens and hats were heavily encrusted
within minutes.

We got some walkways done and removed
part of the snow barrier that the plow heaped up.
Nearly too much and too heavy to do
for us old folks.

It rained all night long with dropping temperatures
and the morning showed everything under
a solid ice cover of about 3cm (1").

Walkways had turned into ice rinks, all cars were
"cemented" in place, all doors frozen shut.

Walking was only possible on the snowy part which
is somewhat rougher than ice.

All major highways were closed at first, but later
were opened up for public travel again.
"Not recommended" was the the official road report advise.

I could easily understand why. Even sanded and salted
the road stayed an ice rink.

In late October I had bought these studs for under my boots
and it turned out to be my best bet.

I felt a little like walking on a glacier but this was
the only way to give Dixie her daily exercise.

When will the ice be gone? Bad news!
Not so soon.
More arctic cold and snow is predicted
with a windchill down to -30C (-22F).
Followed but a short "heatwave" with more rain
before the temperatures will plunge again.

No chance of melting the ice away
anytime soon.

Counting our luck:
we have enough food, firewood and
we had no power outage.
Good.

We will see how we make it through this mess
in on piece.

Spring is only 3 month away!

Gut so.
Und in 3 Monaten ist wieder Frühling!

Morning Walk With Dixie

Having Dixie requires a fair amount of walking.
The first walk starts usually little after 8:00.
Today, we first took a peek at the beach. It was
so pretty in the early morning light.
And each morning the light is different.
The temperatures were down to -12C ((10F) and
sea fog was drifting over the water.
To avoid the brisk NW wind we choose to walk a trail
that runs through the woods, parallel to the beach.
Oops!
The last strong storms knocked a lot of trees down.
And another obstacle a few meters (yards) further on.
We went around the blockage and continued to our view point.
Lake Glensevern, all frozen, but not quiet.
Warmed up by the early morning sun the ice made funny noises.
Dixie who had never heard the ice expanding had her hackles up
until she figured the weird noise meant no danger to us.
That "fat" woman is I, bundled up in several layers against elements.
(I found a tree stump to place the camera on and took a "selfie".)
This little bridge used to be a scary thing.
Dixie always jumped over the creek instead of using it.
No problem anymore.
After an hour later we were back at the beach.
Ready to hurry back home to a warm house.
