On the Road again - Day 7 /8

Yesterday we stayed overnight on a Sam's Club parking lot and I did not have enough electricity to write a blog posting. Today we are situated in a Hueston Woods State Park, OH, with electrical hook-up. A treat, but the detour was something which J.Peter did not like at all. The most of the State Parks are, of course, further away from the major interstates and highways than a Walmart. To bad for us. I would prefer them, it is quiet and one can find the one or other interessant bird. Yesterday we drove from Kansas to Missouri.

In the hedgerows along the interstate trees were blooming. Crabapple, Callery Pear, Eastern Redbud and Hawthorne. 

Spring has come to Indiana

Today we made it from Missouri through Illinois, Indiana to Ohio, mostly on I-70.

That was a long ride, about 650 miles, but we needed to get as far away from the next storm as possible. This year it seems every 4 days a new one is racing across the country.

Translation for my German readers

Gestern übernachteten wir auf einem Parkplatz einer großen Einkaufskette (Sam´s Club). Natürlich gab es da keinen Stromanschluss und das teilweise wolkiges Wetter hatte uns nicht viel Sonnenenergie gebracht. Wir waren vom Staat Kansas nach Missouri gefahren. Heute fuhren wir auf der Interstate I-70 durch Illinois, Indiana nach Ohio. Ein gutes Stück, fast 1000km. Dabei haben wir versucht immer vor dem Sturm zu bleiben der uns mit Gewittern und Starkregen auf den Fersen war. Es hat auch geklappt. Aber über Nacht wird er uns wohl einholen. Doch so weit im Nordosten wird es nicht mehr so schlimm sein wie im Süden. Der Temperaturunterschied ist geringer und das Wetter nicht so extrem. Im Süden können sich dann schnell Tornados entwickeln. Während der Fahrt nach Nordosten veränderte sich die Landschaft vom weiten Grasland zu lieblicheren Feldern mit Büschen und Bäumen. Wie schön ist es wieder grüne Blätter und Grass zu sehen. Hier ist schon der Frühling angekommen. Auf dem letzten Stück mußten wir durch einige kleine Ortschaften da State Parks nicht direkt in der Nähe der Interstates angelegt sind. Hier habe wir für $32 WiFi und einen elektrischen Anschluß. Und schön ruhig ist es auch.

and early this morning we left Quartzsite and headed eastwards.

Our original plans to go up into the mountains were scraped. The weather predicts another winter storm with high winds, rain and snow in the area and we don't want get into this. We probably will have to stay Fri/Sat somewhere in a sheltered area as the forecast predicts 70mph wind on average. That is to much to drive in with a trailer in tow.

Subsequently, we chose to go a more southerly route. Frist leg was planned to go via I-10 to Las Cruses in New Mexico.

We did pretty good until we hit road work in Benton, AZ. The stop-and go took about an hour before we finally passed three lonely DOT people who were working at a bridge.

So, loosing an hour we decided to stop just before sunset in a New Mexico rest area between Lordsburg and Deming on I-10 eastbound. There were only 3 overnight spots empty when we pulled in. We quickly took one while the other two vacancies were filled up within the next 15 minutes. That was our luck!

Translation for my German readers

Endlich hat unsere Heimreise angefangen. Wir rollen wieder!

Gestern haben wir mit einem langen Spaziergang Abschied von der Wüstenlandschaft genommen. Heute am frühen Morgen verließen wir Quartzsite in Richtung Osten. Eigentlich wollte J.P. in das Gebirge nördlich von Quartzsite fahren und ein paar interessante Orte besuchen. Das Wetter hat uns aber einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Es soll ein weiterer Frühlingssturm durchziehen und wir wollen auf über 2000m doch nicht im Schnee steckenbleiben. Auch soll am Fr/Sa sehr starker Wind aufkommen. Da werden wir uns irgendwo Schutz suchen müssen. Wir wollen ja mit dem Camper nicht bei über 100kmh auf der Interstate fahren. Also haben wir uns erst einmal für eine etwas südlichere Route entschieden. Es ging auch ganz gut bis wir in einen ewig langen Stau gerieten. Nach etwa einer Stunde "stop and go" hatten wir endlich wieder freie Fahrt. Deshalb haben wir auch nicht ganz unser Ziel erreicht aber wir fanden kurz vor Sonnenuntergang noch einen, von 3 freien, Übernachtungsplatz entlang der Interstate. Nicht gerade ideal, die Interstate und eine stark befahrene Bahnlinie sind unsere direkten Nachbarn, aber besser als überhaupt keinen Stellplatz. 

Morgen früh geht es dann weiteren Richtung Las Cruses, NM (New Mexico). 

Wenn ihr euch wundert warum man immer die Abkürzungen hinter den Stadtnamen schreibt: es gibt in den USA viele Städte/Ortschaften die den gleichen Namen haben aber in verschiedenen Staaten liegen. Deshalb AZ, NM, CA oder so hinter dem Namen (Arizona, New Mexico, California) damit man genau weiß welcher Ort gemeint ist. Es passiert auch des öfteren daß Reisende statt in Sydney, Australien in Sydney NS, Canada landen. ;) which is in Nova Scotia. Ein Fehler der beim Buchen einer Reise leicht passieren kann. 

Das blaue Ding am Camper ist der "blue boy". Damit wird das Abwasser entsorgt wenn man nicht mit dem ganzen Gespann zur Sani-station fahren will. Einfach abfüllen und hinter dem Auto herziehen.

A Wild Dash Out Of The Snow

 We escaped the Texas winter storm!

We did, because, when we checked on the weather early in the morning, we discovered there was a two hours window to get out ...

Within half an hour we were packed and on the road. 

Sleet was coming down already and within 15 minutes it was snowing heavily. 

Despite temperatures of +2 C (36F) 

 wet snow accumulated on the road to a nasty slush.

Should we take the next exit and return to Balmorhea TX? 

Peter decided not to, because the road cameras showed bare roads (green) 

just an hour ahead of us.

we saw the roads were “orange” (difficult driving) and the weather forecast said +1 C, (33F), 90% snow accumulating 10-30cm (8 to 10 inch).

 Fortunately we got some help. 

Two semi-trailers, driving ahead of us,

squished the the slush out of the way with their big tires.

The bad driving took about a hour until Van Horn, TX ...

then the snow went over into rain. After that we had only sleet, in El Paso, TX it still rained

snow was only visible on the mountain tops.

Reaching Las Cruces NM the weather was partly cloudy, dry and + 12C (53.6 F) mild. 

We had made it!

When we looked around at the familiar scenery, driving I-10 west, we smiled. 

That's what we had been looking forward to!

We drove on until an hour before sunset.

Las Cruces, NM to Shreveport, LA

Leaving Las Cruces early in the morning we only had to drive through light morning traffic in El Paso. So sad to see the differences of two bordering countries:

and across the border - Mexico. 

But I liked their colourful houses. The I-10 ran us through more endless mesas until we entered Texas. The landscapes of New Mexico and western Texas showed signs of a mega drought the West of the US has been in for many years already. 

Tinder dry grass and vegetation all over.  Waterless dug-outs. At one spot I saw the carcass of a poor cow near an empty watering hole. Fire advisory signs were up at every turn. 

Western Texas also is the area with lots of oil business,

their signs marked a long stretch. 

After a night in Big Spring, TX we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise. 

The day turned out very windy and we decided to find a place to park near Abilene, TX. To our dismay all spaces in the local State Park were occupied. Spring Break, they told us; of course, we had forgotten all about that. 

But - as it turned out this was our lucky strike. 

Later, when we drove into Eastland, TX to stay overnight, I saw big plumes of smoke in the sky. A quick check on the internet confirmed that several wildfires had cropped up and one very close to that State Park we had looked at. 

Evacuation orders were given around the affected area. 

One never knows when a disappointment turns into an advantage. 

Today we drove, with the help of a strong tailwind, all the rest of the I-20 through Texas. We bypassed Fort Worth

and Dallas during midday, without any problems.

East of Dallas the landscape looked very different. Tall pine and oak trees. 

More and more green grass, and first signs of spring. Texas Redbud were blooming here and there, and I also saw a few Mexican Plum trees covered with cream coloured flowers. 

What a relief for the eyes. Around 4PM in the afternoon we crossed into the state of Louisiana and found a place for the night. Sweet smelling

Wir verließen Las Cruces frühmorgens und fuhren durch El Paso in Richtung Interstate 10. Es ist schon traurig wenn man die Unterschied zwischen den beiden Ländern sieht. Den ganzen Tag fuhren wir durch endlose, trockene Hochebenen bis hinein nach Texas. Hier war die Landschaft sogleich vom Ölgeschäft geprägt. Überall war es knochentrocken.  Zeichen der jahrelangen Dürre die hier herrscht. Riesigen Weideflächen mit vertrocknetem Gras, ausgetrocknete Wasserlöcher und magere Rinder. Eines lag tot neben einem Wasserloch. Überall Warnungen wegen extremer Brandgefahr. Wir verbrachten die erste Nacht in Big Spring. Ein wunderschöner Sonnenaufgang begrüßte uns auf dem Weg zu einem der staatlichen Naturschutzparks. Dort wurden wir allerdings abgewiesen. Alles ist wegen der Frühlingsferien ausgebucht, sagte man uns. Daran hatten wir natürlich nicht gedacht. Doch es war zu unserem Besten, wie es sich später herausstellte. Wegen des stürmischen Seitenwindes kamen wir an diesem Tag nur bis Eastland. Am Himmel türmten sich Rauchwolken und auf dem Internet konnte ich nachlesen daß in der Gegen um den Naturpark Waldbrände ausgebrochen waren und Evakuierungen vorgenommen wurden. Glück im Unglück, daß wir dort keinen Platz bekommen hatten! Auch südlich von Eastland brannte es. Doch der Wind drehte auf Nordwest und wir verbrachten die Nacht sicher. Heute ging es mit gutem Rückenwind an Fort Worth und Dallas vorbei. Östlich von Dallas wurde die Landschaft dann zunehmend grüner. Grünes Gras, hohe Eichen und Kiefernbäume säumten die Straße. Zeichen von Frühling: lila blühenden Kanadische Judasbäume und kremfarbene, wilde Pflaumenbäume. Gegen 16:00 Uhr erreichten wir dann den Teilstaat Louisiana, und fanden auch gleich einen Rastplatz für die Nacht. Ganz in unserer Nähe blühte duftender Gelber Jasmin.
