The first weeks back at home.

It was good to be back home ! 

The first weeks back at home are always very busy. 

First we assessed the damage the storm had done.

There was not so much around our house, 

only the garden fence and arbor were battered, 

but that we can fix again.

But on our first walk around the natural area we saw a lot of downed trees.

Workers will be busy a long time cleaning 

all the hiking trails for the coming summer season. 

Second: The trailer had to be cleared out and, for a while,

there was chaos in both trailer and the house until everything was stored away again.

Then followed a week of deep cleaning, 

Soon - to be cleaned up again

with toothbrush and Q-tips for the nooks and crannies. 

Soon the first summer renters will arrive and everything has to be squeaky clean.

Two days after we arrived I sowed a few tomato seeds. 

It seemed very late to do this year.

Today, I potted them into individual pots and 

16 days after they moved into their own pots

within the next six weeks 

I hope that they will be ready for transplanting into the garden. 

Outside the temperatures have been like in late February. 

Nothing is really green yet. 

But some of the migrating birds have found their way back to our area.

On May 4 we documented the arrival of the first Hummingbird of the season, 

three days ahead of the usual arrival time.

Despite being busy I found time to visit my favourite spot,

Translation for my German readers

Nach der langen Reise war richtig gut wieder zuhause zu sein! 

Zuerst einmal haben wir uns die Schäden angesehen, 

die die Winterstürme hinterlassen hatten. 

Wir sind glimpflich davon gekommen, nur der Gartenzaun 

und der Arbor waren umgeweht. Aber das läßt sich leicht reparieren. 

Im nahegelegenen Wald sah es allerdings schlimmer aus. 

Da hatten die Sturmböen viele Bäume gefällt. 

und es wird noch Wochen dauern bis die Arbeiter alle Wanderwege 

wieder ganz in Ordnung gebracht haben. 

Als nächstes wurde dann der Campingwagen ausgeräumt 

und es herrschte Chaos im Haus bis alles wieder seinen angestammten 

Platz gefunden hatte. Dann kam eine Woche Intensivreinigung, denn Ende

Mai kommen schon die ersten Sommergäste und

da muß alles wieder super sauber sein.

Zwei Tage nach unserer Ankunft wurden 

noch schnell ein paar Tomatensamen gesät. 

Besser spät als nie!

Jetzt, nach guten zwei Wochen wurden sie heute 

in einzelne Blumentöpfe umgepflanzt. 

Jetzt haben sie noch etwa sechs Wochen 

bevor sie in den Garten umziehen können. 

Das Wetter ist noch recht kühl, zeitweise 

gab es sogar noch leichtern Bodenfrost. 

Doch Boten des nahenden Frühlings sind zu sehen.

Es blühen die Osterglocken und die 

ersten Zugvögel sind auch schon da. 

Am 4.Mai kam der erste Kolibri an. 

Sie überwintern in Mexiko. 

Von seinen roten Halsfedern war 

vor lauter Kälte nichts zu sehen. 

Er sah ziemlich verfroren aus, das arme Vögelchen. 

Trotz allem fand ich doch die Zeit

 meinen Lieblingsplatz zu besuchen. 

Die Aussicht von dort ist immer wieder wunderschön.

On the Road again - Day 1

Finally, traveling for home has started! We are on the road again.

and early this morning we left Quartzsite and headed eastwards.

Our original plans to go up into the mountains were scraped. The weather predicts another winter storm with high winds, rain and snow in the area and we don't want get into this. We probably will have to stay Fri/Sat somewhere in a sheltered area as the forecast predicts 70mph wind on average. That is to much to drive in with a trailer in tow.

Subsequently, we chose to go a more southerly route. Frist leg was planned to go via I-10 to Las Cruses in New Mexico.

We did pretty good until we hit road work in Benton, AZ. The stop-and go took about an hour before we finally passed three lonely DOT people who were working at a bridge.

So, loosing an hour we decided to stop just before sunset in a New Mexico rest area between Lordsburg and Deming on I-10 eastbound. There were only 3 overnight spots empty when we pulled in. We quickly took one while the other two vacancies were filled up within the next 15 minutes. That was our luck!

but better than none. 

Tomorrow we will go on in direction of Las Cruses, NM.

Translation for my German readers

Endlich hat unsere Heimreise angefangen. Wir rollen wieder!

Gestern haben wir mit einem langen Spaziergang Abschied von der Wüstenlandschaft genommen. Heute am frühen Morgen verließen wir Quartzsite in Richtung Osten. Eigentlich wollte J.P. in das Gebirge nördlich von Quartzsite fahren und ein paar interessante Orte besuchen. Das Wetter hat uns aber einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Es soll ein weiterer Frühlingssturm durchziehen und wir wollen auf über 2000m doch nicht im Schnee steckenbleiben. Auch soll am Fr/Sa sehr starker Wind aufkommen. Da werden wir uns irgendwo Schutz suchen müssen. Wir wollen ja mit dem Camper nicht bei über 100kmh auf der Interstate fahren. Also haben wir uns erst einmal für eine etwas südlichere Route entschieden. Es ging auch ganz gut bis wir in einen ewig langen Stau gerieten. Nach etwa einer Stunde "stop and go" hatten wir endlich wieder freie Fahrt. Deshalb haben wir auch nicht ganz unser Ziel erreicht aber wir fanden kurz vor Sonnenuntergang noch einen, von 3 freien, Übernachtungsplatz entlang der Interstate. Nicht gerade ideal, die Interstate und eine stark befahrene Bahnlinie sind unsere direkten Nachbarn, aber besser als überhaupt keinen Stellplatz. 

Morgen früh geht es dann weiteren Richtung Las Cruses, NM (New Mexico). 

Wenn ihr euch wundert warum man immer die Abkürzungen hinter den Stadtnamen schreibt: es gibt in den USA viele Städte/Ortschaften die den gleichen Namen haben aber in verschiedenen Staaten liegen. Deshalb AZ, NM, CA oder so hinter dem Namen (Arizona, New Mexico, California) damit man genau weiß welcher Ort gemeint ist. Es passiert auch des öfteren daß Reisende statt in Sydney, Australien in Sydney NS, Canada landen. ;) which is in Nova Scotia. Ein Fehler der beim Buchen einer Reise leicht passieren kann. 

Das blaue Ding am Camper ist der "blue boy". Damit wird das Abwasser entsorgt wenn man nicht mit dem ganzen Gespann zur Sani-station fahren will. Einfach abfüllen und hinter dem Auto herziehen.

 While it was not too hot or too windy we decided today to take tour around Organ Pipe National Monument Park.

for about two and a half ours.

There is lots to see and it was good that we came early. When we were done the visitors center was pretty full and we would not have had time to stop and take photos.

Too many cars driving through the park and not enough turnouts along the narrow gravel road. When cars are passing the dust is flying, covering everything with a thin layer.

Once in a while we stopped and that was when I accidentally saw this Cactus wren.

Unfortunately I lost my spare some time ago and have not got around to buy a new one. That will definitely be on my next shopping list!

Peter took this photo of a flowering Hedge Hog Cactus at the visitors center. They must have forced them, because nowhere else where flowers on the cacti we saw. 

Usually the blooms starts in April.

Settling Into Our Routine

 After a few days of adjusting to the new time zone we are settling into our usual routine 

here in the desert Southwest.

We had a necessary laundry/shopping day, refilling water in the tank and getting propane.

The clothes usually dry within two hour in this low humidity and nobody

cares about the laundry hanging out on the line. Saves a lot of "dryer" coins.

and I decorated and sat up our

We have had them for about 10 years now and they are only used when we are here.

There are not the pretty coloured tropical species around but

some are here among the shrubs.

Es dauerte ein paar Tage bevor wir wieder in unserer gewohnten Routine waren.

Morgentliche Spaziergänge entlang des Bewässerungskanal, Einkaufen und Waschtag. 

Die Wäsche trocknet hier in der trockenen Wüstenluft sehr schnell und keiner beschwert

sich daß sie draussen auf der Leine hängt. Es spart uns eine Menge Kleingeld.

Peter bäckt nach dem Rezept seiner Mutter Weihnachtsplätzchen während

ich die kleinen Weihnachtsbäume schmücke.

Die haben wir schon seit über 10 Jahren und benutzen sie nur hier in der Wüste.

Es muß hier geregnet haben denn überall blühen kleine, gelbe Blumen.

Es gibt hier keine bunten, tropische Vögel, aber einige leben hier draußen in den 

Büschen.
