Last Days in the Southwest

There we are again. On the verge of leaving our winter domicile and starting on our long treck towards home. I always say that after January 15 time seems to run faster.

The political situation is depressive and dampened my desire to post anything.

I spent most of the time painting. Some days they turned out better than on others.

We left the desert in California yesterday and moved to another form of rock desert around Quartzsite AZ.

Here will will wait out another system of high winds moving through before we continue on our way northeast. This year we are about two weeks earlier on the go because we want to be home before April. One never knows what kind of new tariffs or border restrictions he will come up with. Better to get out of this country.

Where we found the desert in bloom last spring there is not one flower to see this time.

All plants seem to be on survival mood expect one Ocotillo Cactus which bravely put out a few flowers.

Und schon wieder geht eine Wintersaison zu Ende. Wir sind auf dem Weg nach Hause. Zuerst werden wir ein paar Tage in Quartzsite, AZ verbringen um ein Sturmsystem abzuwarten. Dann geht es weiter. Wir werden uns ständig auf den Wetterseiten online schlau machen denn im Moment ist die schlimmste Zeit wenn kalte Luft aus dem Norden und warme, feuchte Massen aus dem Süden gegeneinander prallen und schlimme Stürme auslösen. Irgendwie müssen wir da durch.

Dieser Winter war hier extrem trocken. Man sieht es. Wo im letzten Jahr viele Blumen blühten ist in diesem Frühjahr alles vertrocknet. Nur ein Kaktus zeigte ein paar einsame Blüten. Im Trockenbett fanden wir ein Verdins Nest. Eine kleine Feder hing im Eingangsloch.

On a rare occasion, when very humid air moves in 

on a cold night we get thick fog

 and when those clouds show up it warns us about 

windy days are ahead

A few days ago the sky looked like this: 

Cirrus and Cirrostratus drawn out into long, fine filaments called 

"Fibratus" I read on a page called "Cloud Appreciation Society" 

that that they are high, ice-crystal clouds.

Most interesting, for a short while there were 

so called "Mammatus clouds" forming overhead.

They seemed to let go rain which never reached the ground.

The drama lasted only for a short while. 

An hour later the front

had moved on and the sun was shining partially, albeit the wind had picked up quite a bit.

On my way to town I spotted Burrowing Owls enjoying the sun as well.

Meistens ist der Himmel hier in Kalifornien tiefblau.

.

Doch manchmal schlägt das Wetter um und wir haben dichten Nebel. 

Fibratus Wolken kündigen windige Tage an. 

Heute morgen aber zog eine Wetterfront durch und es sah für eine Weile ziemlich dramatisch aus.

Mammatuswolken bildeten sich über dem Bewässerungskanal. 

Doch der Regen verdunstete bevor er die Erdoberfläche erreichen konnte. 

(Seit Oktober haben wir hier keinen Tropfen Regen gesehen)

Nach etwa einer Stunde hatten sich dann die Wolken teilweise aufgelöst, doch es soll 

für die nächsten 36 Stunden ziemlich windig bleiben.

Zum Schluß noch ein paar Vogelbilder. Diese Raubvögel sieht man hier regelmäßig.

In der Nähe auf einem anderen Mast sitzen ein Paar Rotschwanzbussarde.

Auch die Kaninchenkäuze genießen die warmen Sonnenstrahlen.

More repair, cleaning and some of birds

What did we do recently, you may ask?

We always find something to do. There is that list of what needs to be tackled in and around this motorhome and we try do a little bit every day. My tasks are usually the cleaning. 

At the moment I am trying to get the baked on gunk off the stove top and limescale off in the shower cabinet. This is not an easy thing to do because major cleaning has been neglected for so long. I tried different combinations of cleaning material (dish soap, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, Barkeeper's Friend, you name it) but so far it has not brought the results I hoped for.

Well, it worked for the microwave/convection oven but not for the stove top. 

JP is busy fixing things like a faucet that was plugged up, a kitchen latch that would not lock anymore, door look adjustment for the half bathroom and 

the main door 

got a brand new lock set/keys. 

Then several packages arrived.

Now the biggest job will be to get all those solar panels on to the roof.

Some are already providing enough electricity during the day for running 
the domestic refrigerator and our electronics. 

When not working we like to walk with Dixie, though, she is not the big walker. 

Rather likes to snooze outside 

or survey "our spot". 

There are not many campers nearby and she enjoys being off leash all day long.

Today she actually chased a coyote away.  

In the evenings we surf the net and I like to read. Usually there used to be a "library" box at the host station. There one could get books for free. Take one, leave one. Unfortunately this year the BML management is very "lazy". No permits, no cleaning equipment nor the book box has been delivered. That is very weird. For now I exchanged my book with that of a neighbour's. 

In the afternoon we used do sit with friends quite often, this time those we like are not coming, 

and we try to avoid people where we inevitably run into political discussions with. 

That doesn't lead anywhere anyway. 

On our walks I sometimes are lucky and a bird perches for a few seconds,

but mostly they disappear in the shrubs before I can take a photo of them.

Was machen wir so den lieben, langen Tag? 

Es gibt immer was zu tun, verkalkter Wasserhahn reparieren, Schlösser justieren oder auswechseln usw.

Der größte Arbeit wird noch sein die Solarmodule auf das Dach zu montieren.

Einige Module produzieren Tagsüber schon Strom um den Haushaltskühlschrank zu betreiben. Den Propan betriebenen Campingkühlschrank hatten die vorherigen Besitzer rausgeschmissen. 

Mir bleibt nichts anderes übrig als weiter zu putzen. Einige Sachen lassen sich leichter als andere reinigen. Am hartnäckigsten sind die eingebrannten Fettreste auf dem Herd und die Kalkablagerungen in der Dusche. Dixie erfreut sich tagtäglich ihrer Freiheit. Weil so wenig Leute rundum sind darf sie den ganzen Tag ohne Leine sein. Meistens aber faulenzt sie. Morgens und Abends ist sie eher wachsam. Da sind dann schon mal Kojoten zu verscheuchen. 

Auf meinen Spaziergängen bin ich ab und zu auch mal erfolgreich, meistens jedoch verschwinden die Vögel zu schnell in den Büschen. 

Abends surfen wir das Net oder wie lesen, obwohl es in diesem Jahr wohl keine Bücher geben wird.  

Sehr schade! In diesem Jahr ist die Verwaltung hier miserabel. 

Keine Registrierungsunterlagen erhältlich, keine Reinigungswerkzeuge (für die Dusche), keine Bücherbox.

Von unseren Nachbarn und Bekannten halten wir uns fern. Man weiß im Moment nie ob man nicht in eine politische Diskussion verwickelt wird. Die Gemüter sind nach der Wahl noch zu aufgedreht.

The first weeks back at home.

It was good to be back home ! 

The first weeks back at home are always very busy. 

First we assessed the damage the storm had done.

There was not so much around our house, 

only the garden fence and arbor were battered, 

but that we can fix again.

But on our first walk around the natural area we saw a lot of downed trees.

Workers will be busy a long time cleaning 

all the hiking trails for the coming summer season. 

Second: The trailer had to be cleared out and, for a while,

there was chaos in both trailer and the house until everything was stored away again.

Then followed a week of deep cleaning,

with toothbrush and Q-tips for the nooks and crannies. 

Soon the first summer renters will arrive and everything has to be squeaky clean.

Two days after we arrived I sowed a few tomato seeds. 

It seemed very late to do this year.

Today, I potted them into individual pots and 

16 days after they moved into their own pots

within the next six weeks 

I hope that they will be ready for transplanting into the garden. 

Outside the temperatures have been like in late February. 

Nothing is really green yet. 

But some of the migrating birds have found their way back to our area.

On May 4 we documented the arrival of the first Hummingbird of the season, 

three days ahead of the usual arrival time.

Despite being busy I found time to visit my favourite spot,

Translation for my German readers

Nach der langen Reise war richtig gut wieder zuhause zu sein! 

Zuerst einmal haben wir uns die Schäden angesehen, 

die die Winterstürme hinterlassen hatten. 

Wir sind glimpflich davon gekommen, nur der Gartenzaun 

und der Arbor waren umgeweht. Aber das läßt sich leicht reparieren. 

Im nahegelegenen Wald sah es allerdings schlimmer aus. 

Da hatten die Sturmböen viele Bäume gefällt. 

und es wird noch Wochen dauern bis die Arbeiter alle Wanderwege 

wieder ganz in Ordnung gebracht haben. 

Als nächstes wurde dann der Campingwagen ausgeräumt 

und es herrschte Chaos im Haus bis alles wieder seinen angestammten 

Platz gefunden hatte. Dann kam eine Woche Intensivreinigung, denn Ende

Mai kommen schon die ersten Sommergäste und

da muß alles wieder super sauber sein.

Zwei Tage nach unserer Ankunft wurden 

noch schnell ein paar Tomatensamen gesät. 

Besser spät als nie!

Jetzt, nach guten zwei Wochen wurden sie heute 

in einzelne Blumentöpfe umgepflanzt. 

Jetzt haben sie noch etwa sechs Wochen 

bevor sie in den Garten umziehen können. 

Das Wetter ist noch recht kühl, zeitweise 

gab es sogar noch leichtern Bodenfrost. 

Doch Boten des nahenden Frühlings sind zu sehen.

Es blühen die Osterglocken und die 

ersten Zugvögel sind auch schon da. 

Am 4.Mai kam der erste Kolibri an. 

Sie überwintern in Mexiko. 

Von seinen roten Halsfedern war 

vor lauter Kälte nichts zu sehen. 

Er sah ziemlich verfroren aus, das arme Vögelchen. 

Trotz allem fand ich doch die Zeit

 meinen Lieblingsplatz zu besuchen. 

Die Aussicht von dort ist immer wieder wunderschön.
