Cloud Formations and Predator Birds

Usually we see a cloudless, deep blue sky over us.

Blue sky over lead lettuce fields

On a rare occasion, when very humid air moves in
on a cold night we get thick fog
Fog over the desert landscape

and when those clouds show up it warns us about
windy days are ahead

Fibratus clouds
A few days ago the sky looked like this:
Cirrus and Cirrostratus drawn out into long, fine filaments called
"Fibratus" I read on a page called "Cloud Appreciation Society"
that that they are high, ice-crystal clouds.

Ominous dark clouds rolled in during my morning walk.
A weather front moving in

Dixie seems to watch the clouds too

Most interesting, for a short while there were
so called "Mammatus clouds" forming overhead.

The clouds form hanging pouches.
They seemed to let go rain which never reached the ground.

The drama lasted only for a short while.
An hour later the front
had moved on and the sun was shining partially, albeit the wind had picked up quite a bit.

Some photos of birds I recently saw in the area.

High up on a power pole sat a Turkey Vulture sunning itself.

Nearby two Red-tailed Hawks were doing the same.

On my way to town I spotted Burrowing Owls enjoying the sun as well.

Since there was no traffic on the road I dared to stop,
roll down the window and take
a closer look.

Fibratus Wolken kündigen windige Tage an.

Last Days in Holtville

On my next last day a fellow camper and I went on a birding trip through the fields

Western Meadowlark (Wiesenlerche)

that border the desert where we were camped out for the winter.

Kildeer (Keilschwanzregenpfeifer)

In the morning we used the van,

Great White Egret (Silberreiher)

and in the afternoon I tried out her electrical bicycle (e-bike), which was great fun to ride.

Enjoying the e-bike

We saw a lot of Burrowing Owls along the roads.

Burrowing Owls (Höhleneule, Kaninchenkauz)
It is the time when their young ones sitting
near the nest hole waiting patiently for a parent to return
with food.

After our morning ride we went to the hot springs which is nestled among those palm trees.
took a shower
The water comes out of the ground with up to 120F/48C
and enjoyed some time in the tub.

The last evening was rounded up with a camp fire at
Sharon and Greg's place.

Lagerfeuer.

Morgen wird alles zur Abreise fertig gemacht.

The End Is In Sight

First of all - we have recovered from our bout of Covid-19 seemingly without any harm. Peter had a cough that lingered for about three weeks but is now gone.

My charger seems to work once in a while, that is good. I hope that it will work until we reach home before I have to order a replacement.

Late in January friends from Germany arrived and parked their motorhome near our camper. Since they like to go shopping I went with them and checked out flea markets, and malls where we "Shopped until we dropped" which I indulge rarely in.

We have also enjoyed a lot of meals together, like here:

German Beef Rouladen with red cabbage and mashed potatoes.

We went for about two days to the Salton Sea for a change of scenery.

Nice to overlook a big body of water. It reminded me of the ocean at home.

Along the shoreline I found a small bird looking for food.

Black-necked Stilt (Amerikanisher Stelzenläufer)

On my recent outing through the fields I found a colony of Prairie Dogs (Präriehunde)

and Burrowing Owls (Kanichenkauz) which were busy around their nesting holes.

Burrowing Owls

Staying in the van I could drive up really close.

Migration of the birds has started and I already saw a
Rufous Hummingbird at the feeder.

A Coyote came by one of these mornings.

But as it is the nature of all things: everything comes to an end, so is our winter stay in California. The temperature is constantly climbing and with the heat comes a lot of "no-see-ums" Sandflies (Gnitzen), which make being outside really uncomfortable. Even Dixie started complaining, while lots of gnats were swarming around her face.

It is time to leave the area. Come next week we will be packing and start moving. Not in a rush as we were in the fall, ever to get away from snow and ice. We plan to go slow, stopping here and there for a day or more and doing some sightseeing.

Greater Roadrunner (Wegekuckuck)

Gut so.
