More repair, cleaning and some of birds

What did we do recently, you may ask?

We always find something to do. There is that list of what needs to be tackled in and around this motorhome and we try do a little bit every day. My tasks are usually the cleaning. 

At the moment I am trying to get the baked on gunk off the stove top and limescale off in the shower cabinet. This is not an easy thing to do because major cleaning has been neglected for so long. I tried different combinations of cleaning material (dish soap, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, Barkeeper's Friend, you name it) but so far it has not brought the results I hoped for.

Well, it worked for the microwave/convection oven but not for the stove top. 

JP is busy fixing things like a faucet that was plugged up, a kitchen latch that would not lock anymore, door look adjustment for the half bathroom and 

the main door 

got a brand new lock set/keys. 

Then several packages arrived.

Now the biggest job will be to get all those solar panels on to the roof.

Some are already providing enough electricity during the day for running 
the domestic refrigerator and our electronics. 

When not working we like to walk with Dixie, though, she is not the big walker. 

Rather likes to snooze outside 

or survey "our spot". 

There are not many campers nearby and she enjoys being off leash all day long.

Today she actually chased a coyote away.  

In the evenings we surf the net and I like to read. Usually there used to be a "library" box at the host station. There one could get books for free. Take one, leave one. Unfortunately this year the BML management is very "lazy". No permits, no cleaning equipment nor the book box has been delivered. That is very weird. For now I exchanged my book with that of a neighbour's. 

In the afternoon we used do sit with friends quite often, this time those we like are not coming, 

and we try to avoid people where we inevitably run into political discussions with. 

That doesn't lead anywhere anyway. 

On our walks I sometimes are lucky and a bird perches for a few seconds,

but mostly they disappear in the shrubs before I can take a photo of them.

Was machen wir so den lieben, langen Tag? 

Es gibt immer was zu tun, verkalkter Wasserhahn reparieren, Schlösser justieren oder auswechseln usw.

Der größte Arbeit wird noch sein die Solarmodule auf das Dach zu montieren.

Einige Module produzieren Tagsüber schon Strom um den Haushaltskühlschrank zu betreiben. Den Propan betriebenen Campingkühlschrank hatten die vorherigen Besitzer rausgeschmissen. 

Mir bleibt nichts anderes übrig als weiter zu putzen. Einige Sachen lassen sich leichter als andere reinigen. Am hartnäckigsten sind die eingebrannten Fettreste auf dem Herd und die Kalkablagerungen in der Dusche. Dixie erfreut sich tagtäglich ihrer Freiheit. Weil so wenig Leute rundum sind darf sie den ganzen Tag ohne Leine sein. Meistens aber faulenzt sie. Morgens und Abends ist sie eher wachsam. Da sind dann schon mal Kojoten zu verscheuchen. 

Auf meinen Spaziergängen bin ich ab und zu auch mal erfolgreich, meistens jedoch verschwinden die Vögel zu schnell in den Büschen. 

Abends surfen wir das Net oder wie lesen, obwohl es in diesem Jahr wohl keine Bücher geben wird.  

Sehr schade! In diesem Jahr ist die Verwaltung hier miserabel. 

Keine Registrierungsunterlagen erhältlich, keine Reinigungswerkzeuge (für die Dusche), keine Bücherbox.

Saftladen!

Von unseren Nachbarn und Bekannten halten wir uns fern. Man weiß im Moment nie ob man nicht in eine politische Diskussion verwickelt wird. Die Gemüter sind nach der Wahl noch zu aufgedreht.

Dumping day and sleeper couch

 Today JP decided to go to Holtville and empty the grey and blackwater tanks. 

I stayed behind in the desert with Dixie for about 2.5 hours. 

Not a sound around, just blue sky and a small falcon (American Kestrel).

Very peaceful.

After lunch we tried out how our two sleeper couches transform into beds.

One is actually quite good. 

It transforms into a comfortable air mattress small Queen size bed. 

We did not pump it up this time. 

The other is more like a jack-knife futon bed, not quite as comfortable and easy to open up. 

One could see that no-one had tried to use that one

for a very long time.

Under each of the  couches we found 2 seat belts in case 

more than two decide to travel in this motorhome. 

They say this motorhome sleeps 6 people, 

I would say 5 is more realistic.

4 adults and 1 child.

Maybe 2 small children on the futon bed.

JP wants to get rid of the sofas altogether.

I would like to keep the queen size sleeper couch. 

Just in case.

German translation

Heute fuhr JP mit dem Wohnmobil in the nächste Stadt um die Abwassertanks zu entleeren. Da bin ich dann mit Dixie alleine in der Wüste geblieben. Eigentlich ganz friedlich hier draussen. Kein Geräusch stört die Stille. Ein kleiner Turmfalke beobachtete uns.

Nachdem JP wieder zurück war haben wir die beiden Sofas ausprobiert. 

Sie lassen sich beide in Betten verwandeln. 

Das eine ist mit einer relative komfortablen Luftmatratze ausgerüstet. 

Das andere ist eher eine Pritsche. 

Es war auch schon ewig nicht mehr benutzt noch gesäubert worden. 

Igitt!

Jedes Sofa besitzt auch zwei Sicherheitsgurte damit mehr Personen mitreisen können.

Alles in allem sollen 6 Personen hier schlafen können, ich denke mir aber

daß es eher 5 sind. 

4 Erwachsene und 1 Kind. 

Naja, vielleicht zwei kleine Kinder auf der Pritsche.

JP will beide Sofas rausschmeißen.

Ich würde gerne das größere behalten.

Man kann ja nie wissen.

Starting the clean up

 This used motorhome that we bought just a few weeks ago is not new, in fact it is 20 years old. 

We paid a fee to get it cleaned,

and yes, it was somewhat clean when we got it.
But -
upon a closer look there is still a lot to do.


Today I took apart the stove top and - ewww!

The last owners have not cleaned this area for ages!!!

It took me 2.5 hours to get it to an acceptable status. Scrubbing with baking soda, water and Dawn.
Because of all the dirt rust could built up and that is not easy to get off now.
But at least it is much better than when I started out.  

Maybe I will cover the inside with aluminum foil.

That was enough for today!

Tomorrow will a new day and a new task to tackle. 

I will clean myself through the whole motorhome. 

Each day another part until it is as clean as I want it to be.

Das Wohnmobil ist schon 20 Jahre alt und wir hatten eine ordentliche Reinigungsgebühr bezahlt. 

Es sah auch ganz gut aus bis wir uns die Dinge etwas näher ansahen. Jetzt werde ich mir jeden Tag eine andere Ecke vornehmen bis alles so sauber ist wie ich es mir wünsche.

Heute hatte ich mir den Kochherd vorgenommen.

 Igitt! kann man da nur sagen. 

Hier drunter war seit Jahren nicht mehr gereinigt worden. Es dauerte auch 2.5 Stunden bis ich es einigermaßen geschafft hatte. Doch die langjährige Verschmutzung hat viel Rost hinterlassen der nun nicht mehr so einfach zu beseitigen ist. Vielleicht werde ich einfach Alufolie unterlegen.
