Last thoughts of 2020

Three more days until the New Year arrives.

 December flew by fast.

This year was different.
Lots of warm, spring like days,
a dusting of snow now and then.
Gloomy days with thick clouds
and high winds.

Christmas came and went.

We had a very few friends visiting for a coffee.

Each on a different day.

Christmas Day was the warmest on record with 14C (52F).

Our "summer ferry" was able to run longer than ever before,

only interrupted by windy days.

There is always something to  see and to photograph.

Landscapes

the surf

birds

seals,

(this one swimming lazily on its back.)

One clear night I was able to see

 Jupiter and Saturn, nearly conjoining

The sun has  now reached its southern most point at the horizon,

seen from my living room window.

From now on it will move northwards again.

In a few weeks she will be behind the tree, then to the right of it and further north.

With this after sunset photo of our international bridge
I will round up this year

wishing you all a
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021
with hope that everything will turn out for the better.
Thank you for following.
Take care all together!
See you along!

in diesem Winter länger operieren.

GESUNDES NEUES JAHR 2021

Macht es gut und
bis dann!

Thundering Surf

After having been cooped up for 2 days because of pouring rain and icy roads
we were eager to get outdoors again and
 walking the beach.
After the storm big swells were constantly pounding the sand.
We had just turned starting back to the parking lot
when it happened.

From the top of the beach grass area we were
watching Dixie who was happily running along the upper edge of the surf.
There came a thundering, roaring sound and we turned around.
A huge wave was forming and approaching with record speed.
Quickly we called Dixie and put her on the leash

I tried to follow the wave with my phone...

...coming closer and closer...

....crashing right in front of us,

the sea spray and foam flying all over the place,
surf shooting over the sand bank covering the area with icy water.

The wave roared on ....

....farther and farther along the beach.

More water followed as new waves broke.

Finally, the surf washed up on the grass in front of Peter's feet.

Where we had been walking the sand just minutes ago a little creek had formed
of water running back towards the sea.
I was glad that we had Dixie secured and safe.
In about 3/4 of an hour the tide would reach its peak and
until then the water would come in higher and higher.
Needless to say, we quickly made our way back to the parking lot.
Better safe than sorry.
On the way back home I was bemoaning that I did not bring my camera today.
All photos were take with my old cellphone.
This wave had been really impressive.
It should have been on a video!

Last walk with friends

Fall is nearly over
and last weekend's strong storm tore all leaves off the trees.
It looks more like winter now.
The swell was still high at the southern end of the island in the morning.
I made a 13sec video clip, see here:
A fresh breeze blew from the west.
By afternoon everything had calmed down considerably and
I enjoyed a nice walk along the beach with "the girls".
They just love to run along the edge of the surf.
Group recall and dealing out lots of treats.
The "girls" are Dixie's best friends.
Rosebud, (Dixie), Summer, Acadia, their "mom" Deborah and "auntie" to Scarlet.

It might have been one of the last walks for all of use together.
By now nearly all our summer friends have left for their homes in the South.
In about a week they all will be gone.
That is a bit frustrating, I have to say, because
we have finally time off from work.

But nothing we can do about that.

We will make the best out of the winter to come.
Lots of walks with Dixie, going on birding hikes,
taking photos and just enjoying the peaceful country we live in.

First days of March

The month of March had planned quite an impressive entrance.
Luckily for us, the storm predicted did not get that bad
up here in our area.
The Temperatures were around +5C (41F)
Though, the strong north-easterly winds accompanied with a full moon
brought quite a surf.
Off course we had to go and see. Impressive.
We were not able to access the beach but I walked down
the stairs a bit to get a closer look.
And then, after 6 hours everything was "back to normal"
High tide vs low tide at..
Herring Cove Beach
Campobello Island, NB

At home the birds around the feeders
seemed imperturbed.

Weather is never boring

This winter is pretty weird, snow and rain
are chasing each other.
Some days we are able to walk the trails
 without any snow
and two days later
it is like Christmas again.
Grey days with little wind
and days like today
where towering walls of water
are crashing onto the beach.
Quite spectacular!
Tomorrow, it will be rainy and warm,
then again icy cold with snow showers.

The weather is never boring here on
Campobello Island
and
spring is only a about 6 weeks away...

Ziemlich beeindruckend!
Das Wetter hier ist nie langweilig und
in ca 6 Wochen ist
schon wieder Frühlingsanfang.
