February - Finally Winter Weather

With the start of February the weather changed from mild to wintry.
Storm clouds rolled in, icy wind blew from the northwest.

The flattened grass shows how high up the surf washed during
the worst of the storm.
And again, the waves eroded more and more of the shoreline.
Roots washed out and trees downed.
One weather front after the other moved in
and we got our fair share of snow.
Luckily, after 19 years in Canada, we finally had decided
to splurged on a snow blower.
At our age shovelling snow isn't fun any more.
The snow changed the drab and brown landscape back
 into a winter wonder land.
Taking photos of all the beauty.
The sand shows where the high how far up the tide reached
during the night.

The days are markedly longer now
and in the evenings, on our walks
around the neighbourhood,
we enjoy the different sunsets.
Always so beautiful.

A Rather Mild January

January started out rather mild, it

looked more like March to us.

But this did not last long, of course,

January is still one of the coldest month of the year.
So, we got our share of cold and some snow too.
Due to the pandemic, we are mostly confined to our island,
walking around and enjoying our most favourite places.
Sometimes we find sea glass among the pebbles,
or empty clam shells
washed off of the fishing vessels.
Sunny, mild days followed by
stormy days.
Sometimes the ocean looks like a mirror
on other we walk in snow on the beach.
But February started on a different note....
Stay tuned.

Fortsetzung folgt...

First Snow of 2020

November 3 the first snowfall occurred.

That is one of the earliest I can remember for the last decade.

Of course it did not last and by mid afternoon I walked out

to Con Robinson's Point.

walked along Racoon Beach
and around the Southern Head

We walked along the beach back towards Southern Head parking lot.

view of the southern part of Herring Cove Beach

The wind was cold, but I am glad we went anyway

Beautiful Arctic

An arctic cold blast made it a challenge to go for our daily walk.

At our place the wind was so cold that hauling in firewood was an ordeal today. Though, with the westerly wind, there was a chance that the woods on the east side of the island were more sheltered.

It turned out to be true and the walk was not bad at all.

The fresh snow had changed everything into winter wonderland again.

Dixie was zooming around, she loves the powdery snow.

Peter on the ground playing with Dixie.

On the way back I briefly looked out over the beach.

It was a challenge to get some photos without tracks because...

... everywhere I went Dixie was ahead of me.

The white and blue makes everything so beautiful.

Not much more to add today.

I just let the photos speak for themselves.

Two "trolls" dressed for the occasion!

No Golfing Today

The sun was shining and Dixie needed her daily walk.

We had already walked the beach this morning and all the roads and walks in the woods are heavily covered with ice.

I choose the golf course in hope to find some grass on the sunny sides. A biting wind blew out of the north-west but in the sun it was relatively nice to walk.

As long as one knew where. Last weeks rain had build lakes on the flat ground and the water had frozen.  In sloping areas water had run downhill and glaced everything with ice. Walking was only possible along the very edges of the woods and on the ice-free parts that faced the sun.

But Dixie did have a good time with lots of tracks to sniff out. At one spot she even found the leg of a dead rabbit. Unfortunately she choose to roll on it and need a bath as soon as we came home because I did not agree with the choice of her perfume.

I walked very slowly and carefully and it took us about an hour and a half what normal takes 30 minutes. Before we walked back to the car we enjoyed the view over Herring Cove Beach in the afternoon sunshine.

Translantion

Thundering Surf

After having been cooped up for 2 days because of pouring rain and icy roads
we were eager to get outdoors again and
 walking the beach.
After the storm big swells were constantly pounding the sand.
We had just turned starting back to the parking lot
when it happened.

From the top of the beach grass area we were
watching Dixie who was happily running along the upper edge of the surf.
There came a thundering, roaring sound and we turned around.
A huge wave was forming and approaching with record speed.
Quickly we called Dixie and put her on the leash

I tried to follow the wave with my phone...

...coming closer and closer...

....crashing right in front of us,

the sea spray and foam flying all over the place,
surf shooting over the sand bank covering the area with icy water.

The wave roared on ....

....farther and farther along the beach.

More water followed as new waves broke.

Finally, the surf washed up on the grass in front of Peter's feet.

Where we had been walking the sand just minutes ago a little creek had formed
of water running back towards the sea.
I was glad that we had Dixie secured and safe.
In about 3/4 of an hour the tide would reach its peak and
until then the water would come in higher and higher.
Needless to say, we quickly made our way back to the parking lot.
Better safe than sorry.
On the way back home I was bemoaning that I did not bring my camera today.
All photos were take with my old cellphone.
This wave had been really impressive.
It should have been on a video!
