Day 3 - westwards

After breakfast we made up our minds.
We would not take the I-81 South!
The surface of that road is so dilapidated
it would have destroyed our camper trailer
and relocated all our internal organs. Not kidding.

We decided to go back to our original planned route
and take the I-80 West instead.
And it was the right choice, though colder and windier.
Mostly less traffic and good pavement.
Beautiful views over Pennsylvania's valleys.
But the mountains seemed endless today.
We joked at one time that surely they must have multiplied
since last time when we travelled through here.
Many farms here are run by Amish People.
Once in a while a snow shower drifted by.

After another long, mostly grey day,
climbing seemingly endless mountain tops,
we finally we made it into Ohio.

First Snow of 2020

November 3 the first snowfall occurred.

That is one of the earliest I can remember for the last decade.

Of course it did not last and by mid afternoon I walked out

to Con Robinson's Point.

walked along Racoon Beach
and around the Southern Head

We walked along the beach back towards Southern Head parking lot.

view of the southern part of Herring Cove Beach

The wind was cold, but I am glad we went anyway

Early November Days

(Deutsche Übersetzung: siehe unten)

November is here again.
The busy summer season is over and there is
more time for contemplation.
Time to take up following other bloggers again,

and time to write something on my own.

The sorrow about Molly still lingers in my mind,
I try to let go,
each day a little more.
Some day I will change my header photo.
But not yet.

Redirecting my thoughts..

..to gardening.
The garden that has to be cleaned up.
All the flowers that have to get repotted for wintering

..to hiking
Taking walks in the woods
and along the coast line.
These walks have a calming, healing power.
Some time I walk alone, sometimes with hubby
and sometimes with friends.

..to bird-watching.
Through fellow birder friends I have learned to see
a lot more than just birds.
The latest storms for example have brought unusual guests.
Blown out of their migratory ways by fierce gales.
Yellow-throated Vireo
Yellow-billed cuckoo

Poor things. I hope they will find their way back
to their winter homes before the cold sets in.

..to the new addition to our family.
A rescue puppy.
That will definitely keep us
from growing roots on the couch.

More to come.

November: tomatoes and flowers

An unbelievable temperature for November 3.
17C (62F) at 3 PM.
I went out to finally cleared up my veggie beds
and could still harvest some
cherry tomatoes!
Even the dill that I planted had seeded itself and new dill plants
were growing up already.
Too bad that I had to uproot all the pretty flowers.

 Nasturtium (Tropaeolum polyphyllum)
 Pot Marigold (Calendula officinalis)
 Borage (Borago officinalis)
Cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus)
But colder temperatures are predicted for the next couple of days.
We need to get back to normal.

Late November Eye Candy

The little things make life pleasant.
While walking along the deck this bright Nasturtium flower caught my attention.
Isn't it weird, I thought, their seeds are so reluctant
to germinate in the spring.
It takes forever to get them going.
But once they are established they seem pretty hardy.
Maybe it is because it is snugly covered up
with dry leafs.

Later, sitting on the couch with a cup of coffee,
 looking out of the window,
I had this view of a beautiful sunset.
Eye candy on a blustery November day.

November - flowers

As I write this it is November 18.
The days are much shorter and
you should think it is cold and snowy here in Canada,
but no, it is mild and
there is life in my vegetable garden.
So, for the record I went outside and took some photos.
Lettuce and some spinach plants are still growing.
The spinach unfortunately is favoured food of the
voles or field mice. Arrgh!
There are quite a few holes in my garden beds. Not good,
not good at all!
Calendula flowers and
Cosmos
Even a few Nasturtiums are hanging in there.
In the flower beds "Sweet William", dianthus, are showing a few late
flowers as well.
No wonder that we are able to snack on fresh lettuce and parsley.
The tomato is the last one of my summer tomatoes.
November in Canada is not so bad at all!

Grey Days, Sunny Days

November, already a thing of the past.
Its last days were rather on the chilly side,
down to 15°F (-10°C),
grey and windy.
There was no way that I was going to stay outside
for a prolonged time.

One of the favourite things we did, when staying in the desert of California,
was getting together and do a puzzle.
No desert here, no friends either, that is too bad.

On the good side: I had a puzzle at hand.
This time it was a 500 piece "Still-life" of flowers and fruit.
The sun had already faded the picture on the container.
Red had turned to purple, yellow to white and green to a bluish tint.
It took me two afternoons in deep concentration
to get it done. There!
Maybe my brain is still working as it should.
That is good.
Because, sometimes I am in doubt about it.
Things seem so easily forgotten
in a mere moment.
*
Today, on the first day of December,
the temperatures were on the rise again,
the sun was out.
On the windowsill
another project looks promising.

It was in August when I took cuttings of various petunias.
Some of them made it until now.
Pretty flowers.
Memories of bygone summer days.

Aunties summary

Erinnerungen an vergangene Sommertage.

Snow? Not yet.

The weather forecast has predicted
the first snowfall for our area.
Arctic temperatures have already reached the Northeastern part
of New Brunswick
where winterstorm conditions are reported.
Not so here.
It rained all night but has stopped now.
I went outside to get a photo
of strawberry flowers I saw yesterday.

Yes - my pink ornamental strawberry actually produced three flowers!

That shows how mild our day temperatures have been until now.
Even a young willow tree is confused
as to what part of the year we are in.
There are a few fresh, green leaves on it's twigs.
Willow spouts young, green leaves. Nov 23, 2015

As much as I "hate" winter I think for the benefit of Nature
we should enter the cold period now.
Some don't want to go asleep
In the western entrance of our house it looks like this:
Flowers on the African Daisies, Geranium and Impatiens.
With temperatures between 40- 45°F (4-7°C) they just don't want to go asleep.
Impatiens and Shamrock (Oxalis)
Outside we harvested some of the latest apples of this season. I wrote a few years ago about that we found about 5 or so different apple trees on our property. I am still trying to figure out what kind of apples they are. One thing is for sure: they are all old fashioned, heirloom apples.  Some are more sweet and soft, others crisp and tart. They smell and taste way better than any apple you can buy nowadays.
The best thing: these late ones are not worm eaten and taste delicious. The one to the left is the one that will be
best for storage.

Nearly noon now and still no snow, but the Temperatures are falling constantly. The clouds are hanging low and grey, wind gusty out of the North.
Maybe I'll cook some baked apples....

Meine Ziererdbeere zeigt drei neue, rosa Blüten
