More "migrants" arriving

Every day is getting a little warmer and yesterday I moved all the pots
from my bedrooms into the greenhouse.
Finally my bedrooms look like bedrooms again!
During the chilly nights I will cover them up with plastic.
Not very pretty but effectively keeping the plants
warm during the chilly nights.
And, I realize that I have to clean out a lot of junk
that has accumulated during the winter.

These are also the days where I still have some
time to go "birding" with friends.
I got into that hobby last spring and I have to admit that I am
pretty much hooked now. I find it very relaxing and it gives us so much fun walking
the various trails together and keeping an eye on bird movements and calls.
My husband thinks I am a little too "crazy" about it.
A bird is a bird, right?
Here we did not see any birds but the frogs were making
a lot of noise and warming themselves up in the bright sunshine.

Above we saw several Turkey Vultures circling in the air.
They look a little like "batman" to me.
On our walk across the campground area we found
a Golden-crowned Kinglet.
Today I accidentally looked at my feeders and there was
another new migrant arrival: Chipping Sparrow
And finally I climbed onto the kitchen counter top
to take a shot through the kitchen window.
In the Hawthorne tree outside I discovered
a Eastern Phoebe.
Last year it arrived April 15.
Soon my jobs as landscaper and at the motel will take over again
and my time for birding will be severely hampered.
Have to make the best out of it
as long as I still can.
Who will arrive next?

January, so far, so good.

We reached he second half of January without any winter trouble. Already, the sun is shining a good hour longer than in December, and what a delight is that!
Sure, we had to shovel snow, and we are trying to keep the house warm,
but all in all, not too bad, we are not complaining.
There is a downside to the strong, constantly blowing north-westerly wind.
It makes one hesitate to go outside for a prolonged period of time.
If Molly would not be there, I probably would have grown roots with all that "sofa sitting" by the fire. She is the one that gets me out and about.
The cold and snow does not affect her at all.
Born in the winter, she grew up as an outside dog,
with temperatures around -40° F (°C).
It still shows.

What to do all these days?
Daily chores and cooking cannot fill the whole day.
Reading a good book or cruising online makes time go bye faster.
I confess that I am quite hooked onto a certain web page.
There one can find "thousand and one" ideas
about gardening, crafts, decor, recipes etc.

Once in a while I take my camera and walk from window to window.
Like today.
Fisher boats and their crews are braving the weather.
I look at the wind whipped waters of the Passamaquoddy Bay.
Nae, couldn't do that,
would be feeding the fish all day long!

Around the house snowdrifts are piling up and
frozen waves are forming here
 and there.
Blue and white - I like the colours.
*
Turning around,
inside the warm house my wintering plants are doing well.
In a cool room, half asleep (dormant), they are waiting for warmer days.
Some, in the warm temperatures of the living room,
seem quite happy about the longer sunshine hours.
They have started to grow pretty flowers!
A self-sown impatiens mixed with a basil,
and some surviving wave petunias.

Sorry, guys it will take another month and a half before
we can start  thinking of gardening again.

Outside, in front of the flowers,
a lonely squirrel on my lawn.
Looks more like the Arctic
to me.

Auntie's tanslation

So weit, so gut.
Was macht man so den ganzen Tag.

Snow? Not yet.

The weather forecast has predicted
the first snowfall for our area.
Arctic temperatures have already reached the Northeastern part
of New Brunswick
where winterstorm conditions are reported.
Not so here.
It rained all night but has stopped now.
I went outside to get a photo
of strawberry flowers I saw yesterday.

Yes - my pink ornamental strawberry actually produced three flowers!

That shows how mild our day temperatures have been until now.
Even a young willow tree is confused
as to what part of the year we are in.
There are a few fresh, green leaves on it's twigs.

As much as I "hate" winter I think for the benefit of Nature
we should enter the cold period now.
Some don't want to go asleep
In the western entrance of our house it looks like this:
Flowers on the African Daisies, Geranium and Impatiens.
With temperatures between 40- 45°F (4-7°C) they just don't want to go asleep.
Impatiens and Shamrock (Oxalis)
Outside we harvested some of the latest apples of this season. I wrote a few years ago about that we found about 5 or so different apple trees on our property. I am still trying to figure out what kind of apples they are. One thing is for sure: they are all old fashioned, heirloom apples.  Some are more sweet and soft, others crisp and tart. They smell and taste way better than any apple you can buy nowadays.
The best thing: these late ones are not worm eaten and taste delicious. The one to the left is the one that will be
best for storage.

Nearly noon now and still no snow, but the Temperatures are falling constantly. The clouds are hanging low and grey, wind gusty out of the North.
Maybe I'll cook some baked apples....

 Auntie's translation

Meine Ziererdbeere zeigt drei neue, rosa Blüten
