February - Finally Winter Weather

With the start of February the weather changed from mild to wintry.
Storm clouds rolled in, icy wind blew from the northwest.

The flattened grass shows how high up the surf washed during
the worst of the storm.
And again, the waves eroded more and more of the shoreline.
Roots washed out and trees downed.
One weather front after the other moved in
and we got our fair share of snow.
Luckily, after 19 years in Canada, we finally had decided
to splurged on a snow blower.
At our age shovelling snow isn't fun any more.
The snow changed the drab and brown landscape back
 into a winter wonder land.
Taking photos of all the beauty.
The sand shows where the high how far up the tide reached
during the night.

The days are markedly longer now
and in the evenings, on our walks
around the neighbourhood,
we enjoy the different sunsets.
Always so beautiful.

Yo-Yo February

This sums it up pretty nicely.

February has been a yo-yo weather wise.

A day with low hanging clouds, ...

... snow, ice, ...

... rain and fierce wind.

Quickly turned overnight...

 ... into a brillant sunny

... dazzling blue and white one.

Mild evenings invited for watching the sunset

while taking an after supper walk.

A rare "sun dog".

Ice crystals reflecting the rays of the sun.

And just as quickly

the weather changed back again to the gloom.

No tracks where we walked.

Snow starting to fall, the wind was picking up ...

... full snowstorm when we returned home.

Tomorrow we will be out

shovelling again.

24 more days until Spring.

Keine Spuren in neuen Schnee.

White and Blue Winter Delight

Today, after yesterdays heavy snow storm,
we went out for our daily walk.
What a beautiful day!
On the beach the light was blinding bright
and we decided to turn into the woods instead
Dixie is very good camouflaged and
sometimes barely visible.
I just love the
white and blue winter colours!

Cabin Fever

With three days cooped up inside because of an extreme cold and windy weather pattern I am bordering on "cabin fever".

Wind chills down to -35C (-31F) are a hazard to exposed skin
and not recommended for a walk.
What to do?
I could read,
but Dixie is "bored to death".
She keeps going to her "toy box" picking
one item after the other to throw at our feet.
"Tug-of-war" and "fetch-the-ball" are her favourite games
and chewing endlessly on squeaking toys is next.
Or disembowelling stuffed toys - Great fun!
We sit down on the floor with her and play as good as we can
on our limited floor plan.
A heated ware house would be the thing!
With all kind of fancy agility play stuff.
We got her tired out eventually and she is ready for a nap.
Until the next energy boost.
One more day to go.

Tomorrow, the temperatures are predicted to rise up to
 0C (32F)
and we are looking forward to a LONG walk.

Was soll man da nur machen?

Just in Time

With a severe winter storm on the horizon
I could not let our girl go around half naked.
Just in time I sewed our little Princess a new coat
from an old windbreaker jacket of mine.
I am usually not a gifted seamstress, hems and zippers are all
that I normally use to get done.

But I think I did well this time.
We are ready for a foot of snow and fierce, icy winds.
Dixie seems to like her coat, too.

Scallop Season

Today, scallop season of 2017 started.
From our living room window I could observe
lots of small and bigger vessels out on the water.
Sea fog swirling around, flurries were in the air.
Later, the sun came out for a short period of time.
Hour and hours they went up and down dredging for scallops.

A pretty sight, but don't ask me about
how the bottom of the bay looks like after they are all done.

January, so far, so good.

We reached he second half of January without any winter trouble. Already, the sun is shining a good hour longer than in December, and what a delight is that!
Sure, we had to shovel snow, and we are trying to keep the house warm,
but all in all, not too bad, we are not complaining.
There is a downside to the strong, constantly blowing north-westerly wind.
It makes one hesitate to go outside for a prolonged period of time.
If Molly would not be there, I probably would have grown roots with all that "sofa sitting" by the fire. She is the one that gets me out and about.
The cold and snow does not affect her at all.
Born in the winter, she grew up as an outside dog,
with temperatures around -40° F (°C).
It still shows.

What to do all these days?
Daily chores and cooking cannot fill the whole day.
Reading a good book or cruising online makes time go bye faster.
I confess that I am quite hooked onto a certain web page.
There one can find "thousand and one" ideas
about gardening, crafts, decor, recipes etc.

Once in a while I take my camera and walk from window to window.
Like today.
Fisher boats and their crews are braving the weather.
I look at the wind whipped waters of the Passamaquoddy Bay.
Nae, couldn't do that,
would be feeding the fish all day long!

Around the house snowdrifts are piling up and
frozen waves are forming here
 and there.
Blue and white - I like the colours.
*
Turning around,
inside the warm house my wintering plants are doing well.
In a cool room, half asleep (dormant), they are waiting for warmer days.
Some, in the warm temperatures of the living room,
seem quite happy about the longer sunshine hours.
They have started to grow pretty flowers!
A self-sown impatiens mixed with a basil,
and some surviving wave petunias.

Sorry, guys it will take another month and a half before
we can start  thinking of gardening again.
*
Outside, in front of the flowers,
a lonely squirrel on my lawn.
Looks more like the Arctic
to me.

Auntie's tanslation

So weit, so gut.
Was macht man so den ganzen Tag.
