After having been cooped up for 2 days because of pouring rain and icy roads
we were eager to get outdoors again and
walking the beach.
After the storm big swells were constantly pounding the sand.
We had just turned starting back to the parking lot
when it happened.
From the top of the beach grass area we were
watching Dixie who was happily running along the upper edge of the surf.
There came a thundering, roaring sound and we turned around.
A huge wave was forming and approaching with record speed.
Quickly we called Dixie and put her on the leash
I tried to follow the wave with my phone...
...coming closer and closer...
....crashing right in front of us,
the sea spray and foam flying all over the place,
surf shooting over the sand bank covering the area with icy water.
The wave roared on ....
....farther and farther along the beach.
More water followed as new waves broke.
Finally, the surf washed up on the grass in front of Peter's feet.
Where we had been walking the sand just minutes ago a little creek had formed
of water running back towards the sea.
I was glad that we had Dixie secured and safe.
In about 3/4 of an hour the tide would reach its peak and
until then the water would come in higher and higher.
Needless to say, we quickly made our way back to the parking lot.
Better safe than sorry.
On the way back home I was bemoaning that I did not bring my camera today.
All photos were take with my old cellphone.
This wave had been really impressive.
It should have been on a video!

Nach zwei Tagen mit Eis und Regen war es uns endlich wieder möglich am Strand spazieren zu gehen. Das Wasser war vom Sturm immer noch ziemlich aufgewühlt.
Immer wieder brachen sich grosse Wellen auf dem Sand.
Wir beobachteten wie Dixie sie fröhlich am Saum der Gischt entlang lief. Weil das Wasser so hoch herauf kam riefen wir sie
und hatten sie gerade angeleint
als sich von Süden ein extra lautes, dunkles Grollen näherte.
Eine besonders grosse Welle raste mit ziemlicher Geschwindigkeit den Strand entlang.
Mit meinem alten Handy versuchte ich die Szene einzufangen.
Der Brecher kam näher und näher, rollte an us vorbei und donnerte weiter den Strand herunter.
Gischt spritzte und schäumte. Nachfolgende Wellen
schoben das Wasser dann bis auf das Grass vor Peters Füssen.
Da wo wir eben noch gegangen waren
hatte sich ein kleiner Bach gebildet.
Da das Wasser noch eine 3/4 Stunde lang weiter ansteigen würde habe wir uns ganz schnell auf den Rückweg gemacht.
Die Wellen würden heute das Gras noch überschwemmen.
Sicher ist sicher.
Auf dem Heimweg beklagte ich dass ich nicht meinen Photoapparat mitgenommen hatte.
Diese grosse Welle wäre ein Video wert gewesen!
