Early April at Home

Nearly a three weeks home already!

There we are with all our vehicles! Trailer, motorhome, vans and cars! We are jokingly saying that our property more and more looks like a sales lot for cars.

The one thing that is missing when returning home this early in the spring is: warm and sunny weather.

That was what we are missing most. This spring it seems exceptional cold and rainy. 

Days on end we experience sleet, rain and deep hanging clouds.

We even got a late snowstorm.

Everything looked more like Christmas than Easter.

The soil is very saturated and it is hard to find a dry spot to park. Neither can we work in the yard or vegetable garden. Everything has to wait.

The word is out that maybe after Easter the weather will turn and finally will warm up. 
What else is happening? 

The border crossings are a bit different with all these new tariffs now. We mostly

drive an hour to mainland Canada to go for shopping even after we got an exemption from tariffs for necessary grocery items because of our island situation. The dollar exchange rate is not in favour for shopping in the US either. Every item is about 40-50% more expensive. Our solution is that we go less frequent and prefer shopping in Canada.

How the border situation will impact the coming tourist season is open for speculation. Will guest come or will they stay away because of the border situation. We will see.

Schon wieder sind drei Wochen vergangen. Wir haben heute unsere Kanadische Registrierung für das Wohnmobil bekommen. Ansonsten hat sich noch nicht viel getan. Gartenarbeit ist noch nicht möglich. Das Wetter ist ziemlich miserable. Schnee und Graupe, Regen und tiefhängende Wolken. Was für ein Unterschied zu den sommerlichen Temperaturen Kaliforniens. Wir haben Hoffnung denn nach Ostern soll es voraussichtlich wärmer und trockener werden.

Wie ist es mit nun mit den neuen Zöllen an der Grenze. Nach einigem Hin und Her hat unsere Insel, wegen der speziellen geografischen Lage, eine Ausnahme genehmigt bekommen. Inselbewohner dürfen nun Nahrungsmittel ohne Zoll einführen. Das bedeutet daß man ohne Probleme im Nachbarort Lebensmittel einkaufen darf. In den ersten Tagen wurden nämlich Zölle auf ALLES abgerechnet. Die armen Zollbeamten mußten jeden Rechnung durchsehen. Für alles was "Made in USA" war mußte 25% Einfuhrzoll gezahlt werden. Tomaten und Orangensaft aus Mexiko war zollfrei, Orangensaft aus Florida nicht. 

Das ist jetzt etwas leichter durch die Ausnahmegenehmigung. 

Aber der Wechselkurs macht alles um 50% teurer und für uns lohnt es sich eine Stunde direkt aufs Festland zu fahren und nur in Kanada einzukaufen. Wie sich die Zollsituation auf die Urlaubssaison auswirken wird bleibt abzuwarten.

Frohe Ostern!

Signs of Spring

Grey days are here again. Yesterdays sunshine has turned into to cool cloudy weather. 

That's also part of spring time. 

On my early doggie walk I am aways looking for photo motives. 

This morning there were several American Crows making a lot of noise. 

Something had disturbed their peace.

A few steps further the buildings and barges 

are mirroring themselves in the motionless water. 

For ones there is no wind at all. 

There is no activity on the bay. 

A lone Red-breasted Merganser cruising on the water. 

A Song Sparrow on the wire.

At home the feeders were crowed. 

Some of the American Goldfinches have already 

turned into their summer plumage. 

Purple Finches and 

a Male Northern Cardinal are always 

outstanding in their red outfit.

And under the old apple tree I find

 the more signs of spring. 

Some crocus flowers have finally opened.

Die Sonne hat sich hinter Wolken versteckt, es ist mal wieder grau und feucht 

als ich heute morgen mit dem Hund spazieren gehe. 

Einige Kaehen machen einen ziemlichen Aufstand 

denn im Baum sitzt ein junger Fischadler.

Das Wasser in der Bucht ist ausnahmsweise mal ruhig und alles spiegelt sich. 

Nichts los da draussen, nur ein einsamer Mittelsäger kreuzt auf dem Wasser.

Ein Singammer sitzt auf einer Leitung.

Zuhause allerdings ist mehr los. Einige Amerikanische Goldfinken (Familie: Gimpel) haben schon ihre gelbe Sommerfarbe.

Purpurgimpel und Rotkardinal sind immer besonders auffällig.

Unter dem Apfelbaum ein weiterer Frühlingsbote.

Die ersten Krokusse sind endlich aufgeblüht.
