News from Campobello

While waiting for warmer weather to come I drove around the area. First I visited Mulholland Lightstation, near the border to USA.

Everywhere winter is still firm in place.

This is the view of Lubec (Maine), USA's eastern most town. Divided from Campobello  by a narrow channel of water.

On the eastern side of the island there is Mill Cove where I sometimes go with friends for birdwatching.

The water is part saltwater and part freshwater. Today there was only a small part with open water which a few ducks swimming around. 

Welshpool Landing, one of our harbours,  is under partial renovation. This is where we will welcome small cruise ships during the summer season. The first vessel is scheduled to dock on May 17.

At home we are still battling with thick layers of ice that rain brought on us sometime in January. It was well preserved under several layers of snow.

Peter has been hacking away with the shovel and a spade to loosen up that ice. Otherwise we fear it takes until June before we get rid of it.

Meanwhile inside the first signs of spring: my broccoli seeds have germinated and the tiny plants show their first leaves.  Tomato seeds and Basil are close behind. Soon I will be busy moving them into the greenhouse during sunshine hours.

Translation

Neulich fuhr ich ein bisschen auf unserer Insel herum. Von Frühling noch keine Spur. Es sieht aus als ob der Winter uns noch fest im Griff hat. Vom Mulholland Leuchtturm aus sieht man hinüber nach Main. Lubec ist die östlichste Stadt in den USA. Sie ist von unserer Insel nur durch einen schmalen Kanal getrennt. Auf der Ostseite besuchte ich den Millcove (Mühlenbucht). Hierher gehen wir manchmal um Vögel zu beobachten. Aber heute war der kleine Brackwassersee noch ziemlich zugefroren. Nur in einem kleinen, offenen Teil schwammen ein paar Enten. Ein weiteres Ziel war der kleine Hafen Welshpool Landing. Er wird zur Zeit teilweise renoviert. Im Sommer werden hier kleine Kreuzfahrtschiffe anlegen. Das erste Schiff, mit 170 Passagieren, wird für den 17. Mai erwartet. 

Zuhause sieht es noch ziemlich wild aus. Eine 15 cm dicke Eisschicht bedeckt unseren Platz. Nach dem Regen im Januar haben 30 cm Schnee sie gut isoliert. Peter hackt seit Tagen darauf herum um uns einen wenigstens einen Gehweg zu  sichern. Auch vor der Einfahrt zur Garage muss geräumt werden sonst fürchten wir liegt das Eis noch bis Juni. Hohe Bäume, die im Sommer Schatten spenden, verhindern nun das die Sonne das Eis wegtaut. Im Haus allerdings sind schon die ersten Frühlingsvorbereitungen im Gange. Mein Broccoli wächst und auch die Tomaten und der Basilikum keimen. In 6 Wochen können sie dann hoffentlich ausgepflanzt werden. 

A Beautiful Spring Morning.

Cruising around on an early spring morning we stopped 

at Mulholland Lightstation,  

also called Mulholland Point Lighthouse.

Towards the West, across the "Narrows", 

we looked at the small coastal town Lubec, Maine.

In front of us the gushing waters of the Bay,

the tide had just turned and

had started on it's way out.

We stayed in lee of Lighthouse, which towered into 

the an incredible blue sky.

The wind was pretty nippy, coming out of the North.

Nearby I saw some birds in the water.

It turned out to be a pair of Bufflehead ducks.

Very interesting birds, I found out.

They swam away swiftly after they saw my curious

head appear over the shrubs.

What a beautiful morning.
