Moved to a more open spot

Last week we decided to get out of the bushes and

move to a more open spot, just a few 

100 yards away.

The gnats where eating us alive.

Here there is a stronger breeze that keeps them at bay.

Over the last decade former occupants have created a little "garden" while 

they camped out here.

About 15 years ago one of them

 planted a Tree Cholla cactus (Cylindropuntia imbricata) 

Unfortunately we will never see it blooming, 

the flowers willfirst appear in April/May

Walking along the canal, 

every morning and afternoon

 In the desert around us lots of yellow flowers 

Brown-eyed evening primroses (Chylismia claviformis)

cover the ground everywhere

One morning a friend alerted me to a huge flock of

birds in the sky.

Upon a closer look it turned out to be 

American White Pelicans

probably on their way to Canada.

Near the camper trailer there sat another of

the beautiful Anna's Hummingbirds.

Next week will be the time to take off again.

Our stay here comes to an end.

Translation for my German readers

Vor ein paar Tagen sind wir umgezogen. Aus dem Büschen, die uns in den 

kalten Monaten Windschutz boten, kommen nun die Kriebbelmücken.

Hier auf der offeneren Fläche weht immer etwas mehr Wind. 

Das hält sie von uns weg.

Der Platz hat auch einen Wüstengarten. Die vorherigen Camper

haben ihn vor etwa 15 Jahren angelegt und auch einen Kaktus

angepflanzt. Leider sehen wir ihn nie in der Blüte weil das 

erst später (April/Mai) stattfinden wird.

Wie jeden Morgen und Nachmittag gehen wir entlang des Bewässerungskanals.

Grüne Felder auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite.

Die Wüste ist zur Zeit mit kleinen gelben Blumen bedeckt.

Eines morgens machte mich eine Freundin darauf aufmerksam daß

ein großer Schwarm Vögel am Himmel zu sehen war. 

Genauer hingesehen waren es Weiße Pelikane auf dem

Weg nach Kanada wo sie ihre Brutegebiete haben.

In den Büschen nahe des Campingwagens saß ein

weiterer Kolibri.

Nächste Woche ist Abreisetag.

 

A lazy day

Up before sunrise again. It was a bit chilly, but turned warmer quickly.

Before sunset.

After a short walk Peter went off to see a dentist. 

He was plagued with tooth ache for a few days now. Unfortunate, is what I say. 

In these times I would rather he had done the check-ups at home. 

I will just knock on wood and hope that this goes by without any harm to us both.

Because of Dixie I had to stay with her and the trailer. She would not stay with strangers as Molly

And Boomer so easily did. 

I had my morning walk and another in the afternoon. The weather was not too warm,

Some sun, some clouds and with a breeze out of the North it was really nice.

Across the canal the fields were kept moist 

so that the young vegetable plants can establish themselves.

 

In the afternoon I also found a new bird species: 

a White-winged Dove perching on a dead branch.

An snooze was also in the plan, I guess, I am still not fully recovered from the long days 

of travelling yet. But no-one bothered, I could just do exactly what I want.

Mrs and Mr Hummingbird visited the feeder frequently.

One hour until sunset and darkness. I hope he will be back by then.

 Heute war nicht viel los. Kurz nach Sonnenaufgang machten wir einen

Spaziergang am Kanal entlang wo, auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite,

 die Gemüsefelder berieselt wurden.

Danach fuhr JP zum Zahnarzt in der Hoffnung daß man etwas gegen seine

Zahnschmerzen tun konnte. Ich hätte es in diesen Zeiten lieber gehabt wenn er

zuhause gegangen wäre, aber das wollte er nicht. 

Da kann man nur auf Holz klopfen und das Beste erhoffen.

Nach einem kleinen Nachmittags Nickerchen machte ich die zweite Runde und 

fand wieder ein anderes Vögelchen. Eine Weisßflügeltaube. 

Das Zuckerwasser wurde fleißig von Herr und Frau Kolibri besucht.

Noch eine Stunde bis Sonnenuntergang und Dunkelheit. 

Ich hoffe JP wird bis dahin wieder hier sein.

Morning walk around the perimeter

In the cool of the morning we took a walk to the front of the area 

where the hot spring is located that the place is named after.

No one was there yet and I could take plenty of photos.

 

The area burned down a winter a few years ago, and I was so glad to see 

That all palm trees survived the onslaught. 

The trees surround a small pond in which the overflow water drains.

The spring’s thermal water is 104F (40C) hot and is channeled into pipe. 

The water fills several small basins

and feeds a "shower head”. Every week the basins are drained, 

high-pressure washed and chlorinated.

It is nothing fancy, but everything is free of charge.

After I was done photographing the first visitors trickled in 

and we made it towards the nice path along the irrigation canal.

Here we can walk for over 2 miles (3 km), if we want. 

The vegetation had exploded over the years. When we came here 

for the first time in 2005 the banks were naked. Now it is a jungle.

 I saw a Red-tailed hawk far away on a power pole 

that got harasses by a Merlin. 

My camera could zoom it in.

and as soon as I had hung up my hummingbird

feeder the first guest arrived. An Anna’s Hummingbird. 

After our morning walk Dixie took up her job as "Guardian Dog”,

while I used the power generated from our solar panels to finish 

up my blogs and bird reports.

Unser heutiger Morgenspaziergang führte uns zuerst zur heißen Quelle. 

So früh am Sonntagmorgen war noch niemand

da und ich konnte ungehindert photographieren. 

Vor ein paar Jahren wurden die Palmen Opfer eines Feuers doch sie scheinen es gut

überlebt zu haben. Sie umschließen einen kleinen Teich in den das überschüssige Wasser

läuft. Das 40 Grad heiße Thermalwasser speist die "Dusche" und mehrere Becken.

Einmal die Woche werden sie trockengelegt, mit einem Hochdruckreiniger abgespritzt 

und mit Chlor desinfiziert. 

Es ist keine supertolle Anlage aber dafür ist die Benutzung absolut gratis.

Schon wanderten die ersten Badegäste heran und wir machten uns auf 

den Weg der uns entlang eines Bewässerungskanal führte. 

Hier kann man, wenn man will, 3km wandern. Seine Ufer sind seit 2005, als wir das erste Mal

hier kampierten, ganz schön zugewachsen.

In der Ferne sah ich auf einem Hochspannungsmast einen Rotschwanzbussard sitzen, der

von einem Merlin bombardiert wurde. 

Meine Telelinse konnte alles gut ranholen.

In einem Bush saß ein Schwarzkopf-Phoebetyrann, und kurze Zeit

nachdem ich das Zuckerwasser aufgehängt hatte kam schon ein

Anna`s Kolibri zu Besuch.

Nach erfolgreichem Spaziergang spielte Dixie dann den Wachhund, 

und ich nutzte den Strom aus,

den unsere Photovoltarpanele produzieren, 

um meinen Blog und die Vogelberichte

zu schreiben.
