It Never Rains in Southern California, right?

 There is a song: "It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert Hammond. 

Usually in this parts of California we are staying at that is quite true, 

but sometimes it is not.

There was a weather warning for a major winter storm over the northern parts of California and bordering states. The outer fringes of this storm had a little impact on our area as well.During the day the clouds gathered, and when I went for my late afternoon walk it looked quite ominous. Would it rain or not? 

The radar showed showers for El Centro about 32km (20. mi) away. 

A few minutes after I was back in the trailer I could hear the "pitter patter" of rain drops on the roof - for about 5 minutes. The next day dawned with overcast skies and we got a longer shower of about an hour. Actually "shower" is vastly exaggerated. It was a light, very light rain. Hardly noticeable on the ground.

That was something different! Because of the bone-dry ground the water pooled on the surface. I joked at the time that we had a "lakefront" property for a couple of days.

Not so today. But that is winter in the desert. When the sun is lowest in the sky we get colder nights, even a thin layer of ice can be on the birdbath

and windshield. 

Other days it might stay overcast with a cold wind. But never for too long. But as soon as the clouds move on and the sun shining it warms up nicely.

Im Süden von Kalifornien regnet es nie! Oder? In den Wintermonaten kann es auch in Kalifornien regnen. Vor ein paar Tage gab es eine Schneesturmwarnung für das nördliche Kalifornien. Die Ausläufer reichten auch bis zu unserem Wüstenlager. Dunkle Wolken schoben sich über den Himmel und 30 Kilometer entfernt gab es lokale Schauer. Kurze Zeit nach meiner Rückkehr vom Nachmitttagsspaziergang höhrte ich wie es, für ungefähr 5 Minuten aufs Dach tröpfelte.  Am nächster Tag gab es dann für etwa eine Stunde einen ganz leichten Regen, der aber kaum den Boden näßte. Es ist eben Winter in Kalifornien und bis das die Sonne wieder höher am Himmels steht können wir mit kühlen Nächten rechnen, sogar mit leichtem Bodenfrost und kaltem Wind. 

Vor ein paar Jahren erlebten wir einen so kräftigen Regen daß wir hier, zwei Tage lang, ein "Seegrundstück" hatten. Riesige Pfützen hatten sich gebildet; der supertrockene Boden konnte das Wasser nicht so schnell aufnehmen.

The good thing of trailer life is that the area to keep neat is small.

Tidying is an easy thing, done within an hour.

With 3 slide outs we have quite a bit of room to move around.

 A guardian breed indeed, always in the field.

Die Tage verlaufen ohne große Aufregung, das ist gut!

Jeden Tag gehen wir unsere fünf Kilometer am Kanal entlang. Während ich hier und da anhalte um nach Vögel Ausschau ist Peter immer weit voraus, keine Ruhe zum Verweilen.

Das Gute am Camping: die Wohnfläche ist begrenzt und das tägliche Aufräumen wird schnell erledigt. Hier ein Rundgang durch den Wohnwagen. Das Schlafzimmer wurde in diesem Winter als gemütliche Ecke umgewandelt. Dorthin ziehe ich mich gerne zum Lesen zurück, während Peter das Sofa bevorzugt oder in der Küche Plätzchen bäckt. In der Essecke haben wir zwei der vier Stühle zu Hause gelassen um Platz für das Hundebett zu schaffen.

Dixie mag allerdings am Liebsten draußen sein. Ihr ist es drinnen zu eng und langweilig.        Sie kommt nur Nachts zum Schlafen in den Wohnwagen. 

Der Herdenschutzhund liegt ihr im Blut, die sind auch bei Wind und Wetter draußen.

Walking

As I mentioned previously we usually walk in the morning 

and in the late afternoon.

That is when the temperatures are most agreeable.

Yesterday we heard a rumble coming from the fields

telling us that the irrigation pump was running full tilt.

This year they grow leaf lettuce across the canal.

Last year it was alfalfa.

The young plants need a lot of moisture so water is essential.

Over a third of the country's (USA) vegetables and three-quarters of the country's 

fruits and nuts are grown in California! Think about it!

Many produce is also delivered to Canada.

What will happen when California runs out of water?

This morning, while Peter went on, back to the trailer, 

 I stopped and waited for quite a while near a Creosote bush.

Small birds were flitting around, in and out of the branches,

looking for food. 

These little ones are not easy to capture because they are hardly ever

sitting still for a second.

I was lucky, my patience paid off.

Dixie meanwhile was on the lookout wondering watching me

while I approached over the dunes.

What did it take "mom" so long to come home?

Wir gehen jeden morgen und am späten Nachmittag mit Dixie spazieren. 

Gestern hörten wir schon von weitem ein lautes Gerummel.

Die Bewässerungspumpen liefen auf Hochtouren.

In diesem Jahr wird hier Pflücksalat angebaut, 

letztes Jahr war es Alfalfa.

Ein Drittel allen Gemüses und Dreiviertel aller Früchte und Nüsse der USA 

werden hier in Kalifornia angebaut.

Was wir wenn ihnen das Wasser ausgeht? Nicht auszudenken.

Heute morgen, während JP zurück zum Stellplatz ging, 

blieb ich bei einem Kreosotbusch zurück.

Dort flitzten ein paar winzige Vögel herum, auf der Suche nach Nahrung. 

Mit Geduld gelang es mir ein paar Aufnahmen zu machen.

Dixie wartete derweil aufmerksam auf meine Rückkehr.

Settling Into Our Routine

 After a few days of adjusting to the new time zone we are settling into our usual routine 

here in the desert Southwest.

We had a necessary laundry/shopping day, refilling water in the tank and getting propane.

The clothes usually dry within two hour in this low humidity and nobody

cares about the laundry hanging out on the line. Saves a lot of "dryer" coins.

and I decorated and sat up our

traditional three small trees in the front of our spot.

We have had them for about 10 years now and they are only used when we are here.

There are not the pretty coloured tropical species around but

some are here among the shrubs.

Es dauerte ein paar Tage bevor wir wieder in unserer gewohnten Routine waren.

Morgentliche Spaziergänge entlang des Bewässerungskanal, Einkaufen und Waschtag. 

Die Wäsche trocknet hier in der trockenen Wüstenluft sehr schnell und keiner beschwert

sich daß sie draussen auf der Leine hängt. Es spart uns eine Menge Kleingeld.

Peter bäckt nach dem Rezept seiner Mutter Weihnachtsplätzchen während

ich die kleinen Weihnachtsbäume schmücke.

Die haben wir schon seit über 10 Jahren und benutzen sie nur hier in der Wüste.

Es muß hier geregnet haben denn überall blühen kleine, gelbe Blumen.

Es gibt hier keine bunten, tropische Vögel, aber einige leben hier draußen in den 

Büschen.
