On the Road again - day 3

What a beautiful quiet night we had in the high desert near Santa Rosa, NM!

We were on the road early again and had set our hopes on reaching Wichita, KS. We took NM 54 from New Mexico into Texas, then Oklahoma and Kansas. But soon we realized that we would not be able to make it that far.

First, we got stuck in a line up of road works again and second the roads were partially pretty bad,

The only stretch that was excellent was through the short crossing of Texas.

The landscape is unbelievable flat. Nothing except vast grassland spreads in all directions

Then it happened what often happens when one travels extensively. We got a flat tire!

After lunch, which we took on a truck stop, we discovered a big bolt in one oft the trailer tires. UGH!

Luckily we were parked on a truck stop in Stratford, TX . After a quick search on the cellphone Peter pumped the tire up with our air-compressor and we could limp about 0.2 miles (ca 300 m) to a nearby tire shop.

within 15 minutes we were back on the road again! You can call that "luck in a disadvantage". 

Since it was obvious now that we would not reach our goal in time of the sunset we looked up an alternative and found a small City Park in Meade, KS that allowed us to stay for the night.

Other campers had found it too. One of our new neighbours was a German couple from Bavaria

and while we had a nice chat with these friendly people we discovered that they also are on their way to Canada.

Translation for my German readers 

Nach einer super ruhigen Nacht waren wir auch wieder früh auf der Straße. Unser heutiges Ziel war Wichita, KS (Kansas). Wir fuhren auf der Landstraße 54 die von New Mexico nach Texas dann durch Oklahoma hindurch nach Kansas führt. Es hört sich weiter an als es ist, Texas und Oklahoma sind hier schmal wie ein Pfannenstiel (panhandle). Der Straßenbelag waren nicht besonders. Einige Strecken waren sehr rau, andere voller Flickwerk, nur durch Texas war sie ausgezeichnet. Und dann passierte das Unvermeidliche: wir hatten einen Platten. Nach der Mittagspause entdeckten wir einen dicken Bolzen in einem unserer Anhängerreifen. Glück im Unglück war das wir in einer kleinen Stadt angehalten hatten und das in 300 m Entfernung eine Reifenwerkstatt zu finden war. J.P pumpte den Reifen mit unserem Kompressor wieder auf so daß wir konnten dorthin fahren konnten. Der junge Mechaniker war fix. Innerhalb von 15 Minuten war alles wieder in Ordnung und wir rollten weiter in Richtung Nordosten. Mittlerweile war uns klar geworden daß wir heute nicht bis Wichita, KS kommen würden. Wir hatten 2,5 Stunden verloren (Baustellenstau, Mittagspause), und wir waren ausserdem in eine neue Zeitgrenze gefahren. (Mountain Time nach Central Time). Also mußten wir eine Übernachtungsmöglichkeit finden. Gleich nach dem Überqueren der Grenze von Oklahoma nach Kansas fanden wir einen Stadtpark der auch Camping erlaubt. Wir waren nicht die Einzigen die hier parken werden. Einer der Camper war ein nettes deutsches Ehepaar daß schon die ganze Welt bereist hat. In einem kurzen Gespräch stellte sich dann noch heraus daß sie auch auf dem Weg nach Kanada sind. Wenn ihr euch interessiert: hier ist der Link zu deren Webseite.
