Last bonfire and lots of treats

Being in the desert making a lots of friends.
Every year we wonder who our neighbours will be this year.
We were lucky when three very nice couples
from Montana moved in.

Dixie watching our cook Anne very closely
Anne and Rick have a big smoker outside.
Recently we were invited for shredded pork shoulder.
Dixie was mesmerized by the smell of the
cooking meat.

Drago and Blossom waiting for crumbs

Also the other people had dogs and they were
lining up as well long before

Hungry guests arriving

we showed up.
So much good food!
Our potluck table - yummy!

Afterwards we moved towards the other place where
Kathy and Ed, Pam and Tim
started a nice bonfire.
All dogs ( Dixie, Drago and Isha) like Kathy
Kathy was the dogs favourite person.
She always had freeze dried beef liver treats handy.

Wherever Kathy (here with Pam) showed up anticipation grew.
"Did she have any treats in her pockets?"
Kathy always had treats in her pockets
And more often than not she had.
Kathy even left a small bag of treats
for Dixie before they left! So nice of her.

Yesterday was their last day around here.
This morning they left for new adventures in
the "Valley of Names", Yuma AZ

Warming up around the fire pit

There the want to explore the area with their four wheel drives.

Ed had a few pouches of magic powder which
he added to the fire.
Look at those beautiful colours!

So we said: "Bye, bye" to our new friends. Maybe we will meet
again in the fall.

Paare vom Staat Montana.

nach "Valley of the Names" umzuziehen.

On the Road again - day 3

What a beautiful quiet night we had in the high desert near Santa Rosa, NM!

Ranch in the middle of "nowhere"

We were on the road early again and had set our hopes on reaching Wichita, KS. We took NM 54 from New Mexico into Texas, then Oklahoma and Kansas. But soon we realized that we would not be able to make it that far.

Landscape in Texas

First, we got stuck in a line up of road works again and second the roads were partially pretty bad,

lots of pot holes.

road patchwork in Oklahoma

The only stretch that was excellent was through the short crossing of Texas.

smooth riding in Texas

The landscape is unbelievable flat. Nothing except vast grassland spreads in all directions

Then it happened what often happens when one travels extensively. We got a flat tire!

Flat tire on our trailer

After lunch, which we took on a truck stop, we discovered a big bolt in one oft the trailer tires. UGH!

A big boltstuck  in the tire

Luckily we were parked on a truck stop in Stratford, TX . After a quick search on the cellphone Peter pumped the tire up with our air-compressor and we could limp about 0.2 miles (ca 300 m) to a nearby tire shop.

The young man in the shop made quick work of it and

within 15 minutes we were back on the road again! You can call that "luck in a disadvantage".

Since it was obvious now that we would not reach our goal in time of the sunset we looked up an alternative and found a small City Park in Meade, KS that allowed us to stay for the night.

Other campers had found it too. One of our new neighbours was a German couple from Bavaria

Our German neighbours

that has extensively traveled the world, (just look at that map on the back of their camper)

Their amazing world maps of travel adventures

and while we had a nice chat with these friendly people we discovered that they also are on their way to Canada.
If you want to read more about their travel adventures here is the link to their website

We will most likely will stay here in this park until the upcoming strong storm (Sat/Sun) has moved on.

(Mountain Time nach Central Time).

Finally!!!

 Finally, finally!

At ten this morning we got the call we had been waiting for for many days! The van was ready for pick up.
Yves drove Peter to the repair shop and I started to make everything ready for travel inside the trailer.
Church in Ajo,AZ
Nonetheless, it took quite a while until they were back.
Peter had to go the bank to get cash and fill up one propane bottle before he returned.
Next we had to pack everything, that we had taken out before towing, back into the van.
After that we had a quick lunch, and after taking down our solar panels and hugging our dear friends we were finally ready to go.

First  stop was the nearby campground where we emptied our tanks, got rid of the garbage and filled up freshwater.

By then the clock was already 1:30pm.
We calculated that with 3.5 to 4 hours to drive
we might just make it around sunset
to reach our destination.

And we did.
With the sun sinking below the distant mountains
"Riding into the sinking sun"

we entered the designated desert area
and readily found “our” spot.
In anticipation friends had set up a chair to prevent others from occupying it.

(sign in memory of a cake Peter baked last winter.)

While darkness fell around us
we quickly sat up our camp.
Finally backed in on our spot

It did not take long before
the first friend and neighbours showed up,
Gerald, and then Darlene and Ron,
giving us warm welcome hugs.
Setting up before it gets dark

How nice to finally being back at our “home in the desert” (since 2005).

But now I am ready for bed!

Endlich, endlich!
Freunde hatten heute in Erwartung unserer Ankunft

Coyote Howls East Campground

We are staying on a nearby campground for the last night down here in Arizona.

Coyote Howls East Campground, Why, AZ

(Don't mistake it for Coyote Howls West campground which offers full hookup)

Our spot right by a water faucet and close to the showers

We came here after nearly a week of boon-docking for free on BLM land close by.

Our idea was to stay one night (for $20), get rid of garbage and empty our tanks.

And after a good nights sleep we will be taking off for home tomorrow morning.

Peter inspecting another shower house

While we walked around the perimeter it hit us that this would be a very good alternative to our old stomping grounds in the desert near Holtville, CA.

The dry-camping area is huge. Lots of space between the rigs.

The fence around the campground is 2 miles long.

The sites are on firm, level ground

The (East) campground offers a lot pull through dry-camping sites. There are several onsite dumps, shower houses, mini golf,  big library, club house, WiFi, trails nearby and more. Many water faucets are dispersed around the area.

Adding up all our expenses (hauling water and driving to the dump every week) and comparing it with staying on this campground: this here would be Boondocking Deluxe.

We seriously consider to stay here again in the future.

Bye-bye and hope we see's again!
