Finally - Home Sweet Home

Finally, we made it home! 

We started out very early and drove about 6.5 hours until we reached our destination 

on Campobello Island. 

Long days, lots of miles, misadventures, bad and good weather, head wind and tail wind. 

What does it matter? We made it home!

Endlich! Wir haben es geschafft und sind wieder zuhause. Alle Hürden sind genommen, 3200 Meilen () gefahren, allen Missgeschicken zum Trotz. Wir sind wieder in Kanada. Jetzt brauche ich erst einmal Urlaub!

Along the I-90 we drove by towns called Rome, Geneva, Hamburg, Poland, Amsterdam, Rotterdam until I thought we had taken a wrong turn and ended up in Europe. ;))

Translation for my German readers

Endlich waren wir wieder auf der Straße! Die Wartezeit für die Reparatur hatte uns ganze 6 Tage gekostet.

Das erste Stück ging von Columbus, Ohio, nach Batavia, New York (in der Nähe von den Niagara Fällen).

Dann heute, fuhren wir auf der Interstate 90 durch den ganzen Staat New York bis nach Massachusetts und weiter bis nach New Hampshire. Dabei dachten wir schon bald daß wir eine falsche Ausfahrt genommen hätten. Wir passierten Rome, Geneva, Hamburg, Poland, Amsterdam und Rotterdam. Alles Zeugen daß sich hier vor vielen Jahren eine Menge europäische Einwanderer niedergelassen haben.

Um 16Uhr30 sind wir dann endlich auf dem Parkplatz eines Alkoholgroßhandel angekommen. 

In den USA kann man nicht überall Alkohol kaufen. Jeder Staat hat da seine eigenen Regeln. Manche erlauben Bier und Wein in Lebensmittelläden, andere nur Bier und wieder andere Staaten weder noch.

Die härteren Sachen (hochprozentiges) kann man nur in speziellen Läden erwerben. Hier gibt es alles, auch europäische Artikel. (Nur keinen Ahrwein)

Auf diesem Platz werden wir die letzte Nacht  ungestört verbringen. Morgen sind es dann nur noch einmal 5 Stunden bis wir endlich wieder zuhause sind. 

Heute nur eine Menge Photos, ich habe mir die Namen der Städte nicht alle aufgeschrieben.   

Still NOT on the Road, but hoping

We are still not on the road, but hoping. The repair shop called just half an hour ago. The new transmission is in and they are finishing up. Then a test drive and hopefully, when all works as it should, we can get our tow vehicle back after lunch. That would be great.

Buck Creek State Park is a beautiful place to wait things out. 

Dixie likes the trails around here

There are very nice trails to walk on which is a delight for Dixie. 

I like the one best that has a bird blind,

Yesterday, my blogger menu did not let me write a new posting. I could not get it to open. Maybe my Macbook is getting to old, they don't do any updates anymore for this one. I tried to install other browsers, but got the same message: not compatible for your version. (13.1.2) Luckily today it seemed to work again. Cross fingers!!

Translation for my German readers

Wir sitzen immer noch und warten auf die Reparatur unseres Vans. Möglicherweise wird er heute fertig sein. Man will noch eine Testfahrt machen und wenn alles gut geht rufen sie uns an. Vielleicht können wir ihn dann am frühen Nachmittag abholen. 

Der Staats-Park ist ein schöner Ort um die Wartezeit zu verbringen. Viele Wanderwege durchkreuzen den Wald. Man hat sich viel Mühe gegeben und Schilder aufgestellt die Aufschluß geben über die großen, alten Bäume die hier noch stehen. Zwei sind über 330 Jahre alt! Die waren schon hier als es noch keine Siedler in Amerika gab! Wahnsinn! 

Ein getarnter Vogelansitz mit zwei Bänken und Vogelbuch gab es auch.

NOT on the road - Day 9

We left our spot in the State Park bright and early. But did not get farther than Columbus, OH

After filling up our gas tank and turning back on to I-70 suddenly there was a loud screeching noise.

Transmission trouble, stranded along the road

What’s was that? The van did not want to accelerate, more weird noises. Luckily there was another

exit coming up a mile away. 

We limped out there about half a mile and stoped on a pull-out along the road.

Peter checked the transmission fluid - not pink, but brown. Something was wrong with it.

What to do? We started calling around to Chevrolet service places. 

No luck, their books were full for 2 month in advance. 

One had a garage that was not hight enough to accommodate our van, and so on.

Finally we called our Auto Insurance (Coach Net) and asked for assistance. 

Hours run by but they worked hard for us. 

We needed to find a place to park our trailer too. RV-park full, too far away, too expensive. 

We decided for another State Park 20 miles away. 

Then waiting, waiting for the tow truck to show up. 

They are towing the van away!, thinks Dixie

First he towed the van to the repair shop that our

Insurance company had chosen: "Byers Chevy" in Grove City, OH

Help! Not good, I had to get lifted into a tow truck!

Waiting again until he returned to tow us to the State Park. It was about

to get dark when he finally manoevered us into a spot.

That is it. Here we are stuck now for the next week without a vehicle.

 a lady (Cathy) showed up to offer us her help!

Anything from driving us to a grocery store or the repair shop 20 miles away. 

She would do it, no questionasked, just give her a call and she would show up. 

Are there angels among us? I am starting to believe it.

Everything happens for a reason, she said.

Wir haben ein Problem. Kurze Zeit nachdem wir wieder auf der Interstate fuhren passierte es: 

das Getriebe gab plötzlich kreischende Geräusche von sich. 

Es gelang uns einen halben Kilometer von der Interstate auf einem Seitenstreifen anhalten. 

Das war´s dann. Versicherung anrufen, Abschleppdienst kommen lassen. 

Der Van wurde in einen Vorort von Columbus, OH geschleppt 

und wir - nach langen Wartestunden - 

landeten endlich wieder in einem State Park. 

Glück im Unglück. Kaum hatten wir geparkt kam eine sehr nette Frau vorbei die unseren Abschleppwagen gesehen hatte.

 Sie bot uns ihre Hilfe an!

 Egal wohin wir fahren müßten - sie würde uns fahren. 

Zum Einkaufen oder zur Werkstatt, kein Problem.

Wahnsinn! Ich fange an zu glauben daß es doch Engel auf der Erde gibt! 

Für´s erste:  wir sind an einem sicheren Ort. 

Alles weitere wird sich schon regeln.

Der Park hat leider kein WiFi, aber wir wollen nicht klagen.

On the Road again - Day 7 /8

Yesterday we stayed overnight on a Sam's Club parking lot and I did not have enough electricity to write a blog posting. Today we are situated in a Hueston Woods State Park, OH, with electrical hook-up. A treat, but the detour was something which J.Peter did not like at all. The most of the State Parks are, of course, further away from the major interstates and highways than a Walmart. To bad for us. I would prefer them, it is quiet and one can find the one or other interessant bird. Yesterday we drove from Kansas to Missouri.

Today we made it from Missouri through Illinois, Indiana to Ohio, mostly on I-70.

That was a long ride, about 650 miles, but we needed to get as far away from the next storm as possible. This year it seems every 4 days a new one is racing across the country.

Gestern übernachteten wir auf einem Parkplatz einer großen Einkaufskette (Sam´s Club). Natürlich gab es da keinen Stromanschluss und das teilweise wolkiges Wetter hatte uns nicht viel Sonnenenergie gebracht. Wir waren vom Staat Kansas nach Missouri gefahren. Heute fuhren wir auf der Interstate I-70 durch Illinois, Indiana nach Ohio. Ein gutes Stück, fast 1000km. Dabei haben wir versucht immer vor dem Sturm zu bleiben der uns mit Gewittern und Starkregen auf den Fersen war. Es hat auch geklappt. Aber über Nacht wird er uns wohl einholen. Doch so weit im Nordosten wird es nicht mehr so schlimm sein wie im Süden. Der Temperaturunterschied ist geringer und das Wetter nicht so extrem. Im Süden können sich dann schnell Tornados entwickeln. Während der Fahrt nach Nordosten veränderte sich die Landschaft vom weiten Grasland zu lieblicheren Feldern mit Büschen und Bäumen. Wie schön ist es wieder grüne Blätter und Grass zu sehen. Hier ist schon der Frühling angekommen. Auf dem letzten Stück mußten wir durch einige kleine Ortschaften da State Parks nicht direkt in der Nähe der Interstates angelegt sind. Hier habe wir für $32 WiFi und einen elektrischen Anschluß. Und schön ruhig ist es auch.
