Out and About - even in the cold

 The last days of October are here and the weather has turned from above to below average  temperatures. 

Dunlins (Calidris alpina) and a Black-bellied Plover (Pluvialis squatarola)

Most of the leaves are fallen now but with the overcast days it seems very gloomy between the trees.  We hit the trails as much as we can to check on late migrating birds.

 and of course because of Dixie who needs her daily walks.

It might seem boring for you, dear reader, to see these vistas again and again but I never stop admiring them. Every day the light is different and every time I find something special.

Die letzten Tage im Oktober sind schnell kälter geworden. und die meisten Blätter sind von den Bäumen gefallen. An einem trüben Tage wie heute scheint es gar nicht richtig hell zu werden.

Doch wir machen uns fast jeden Tag auf den Weg. Einmal um nach Nachzüglern Ausschau zu halten,  denn nicht alle Vögel sind schon nach Süden gezogen, und zum anderen weil Dixie ihren täglichen Auslauf braucht.

Es mag vielleicht langweilig für euch sein wenn ich immer dieselbe Aussicht zeige, aber wir werden nie müde unsere Lieblingsplätze zu besuchen.

Auf den Pfaden sehe ich einige Navigationszeichen für die Schiffahrt und den alten Leuchtturm der auch "Zündkerze" genannt wird.

Immer noch findet man hier und da Pilze (Tintenpilz) am Wegesrand.

Am Liberty Point sieht alles sehr verlassen aus. Unterhalb der Aussichtsplattform bricht sich die Brandung zwischen den Felsen. Nach rechts, in 1.4 km Entfernung, der Leuchtturm "West Quoddy Light", welcher im Teilstaat Maine USA steht. Blickt man nach links die Aussicht nach Ragget Point mit den Inseln "The Wolves" am Horizont.

Und über mir, wie gerufen, segelt ein junger Weisskopfadler vorbei. 

Perfekter kann es nicht sein.

On a Boating Adventure

 All because of a friend had a friend who owns a boat.

I got an invitation to go along

What a treat that was!

We cruised up from North Road Harbour along small islands and ledges

up to the Head Harbour Passage and back again.

While being on the water I took tons of photos from seabirds,

seals and the beautiful nature around us. 

All wildlife photos were taken with a very long tele lens and

appropriate distance were kept at all times.

Not an easy task and a challenge  because of the movements while cruising along 

or moving up and down while just idling.

Luckily there was low windspeed and the water relatively calm.

The sky was wide and beautiful, some grey clouds moving in 

towards the end of the trip, though.

On ledges and islands there were hundreds of gulls resting.

The receding tide revealed ledges where seal would 

gather to rest and sun themselves.

Alles nur weil ein Freund eines Freundes ein Boot besitzt und ich

zu einer Bootsfahrt eingeladen wurde.

Wir verliessen den Hafen an der North Road und

schipperten vorbei and kleinen und grösseren Inseln 

zur nordöstlich gelegenen Head Harbour Passage.

Auf dem Wasser  und auf den Felsen waren hunderte von Möwen.

Auch mehrere Gruppen Seehunde aalten sich in der Sonne. 

Es war ein wenig speziell zu photographieren weil das

Boot auf dem Wasser in ständiger Bewegung ist.

Glücklicherweise war der Wind schwach 

und das Wasser fast glatt.

Alle Aufnahmen sind mit Teleskope photographiert

so dass immer ein ausreichender Abstand zu den wilden Tieren

eingehalten werden konnte.

Wir sahen Silbermöwen (Herring Gulls),  Dreizehenmöwen (Black-legged Kittiwakes), Flussseeschwalben  (Common Terns), Ohrenscharben

(Double-breasted Cormorants) und Weisskopfseeadler (Bald Eagles). 

In der Ferne sichtbar - unser schöner Leuchtturm. 

Über uns spannte sich der endlose, blaue Himmel.

Was für ein schönes Erlebnis!

January 16, 2020

January 2020 was so far a mild one. Wind as usual, but

the temperatures on some days 

reminded more a spring day than winter.

This is taken on the southern most spot of the island and a

close up of a lighthouse one can see on the opposite shore of Maine.

On another day I took a tour around the bay.

Here and there Bald Eagles were perched.

They were on the look-out for food.

This one had his feathers ruffled to stay warm in the early morning chill.

Walking the woods in this mild weather was not a problem.

Beautiful, the green of the mossy ground.

Other days brought us a few inches of snow overnight

but that only did last for a day or two.

So far, so good. Every day without a heavy snowfall 

is a day closer to spring.

Since I mostly show landscapes or Peter with Dixie,

here a photo myself for a change.

On one of our early morning walks I tried doing

a "selfie" of us two.

Not too bad, eh?

Der Januar war bis jetzt ungewöhnlich mild. Die meisten Tage erinnern mehr 

an Frühling als an Winter.

Aussicht von der Südspitze der Insel hinüber in Richtung Maine. Dort steht auch

ein Leuchtturm. Den habe ich dann an einem anderen Tag besucht und photographiert.

Hier und da sitzen die Weiskopfadler und halten Ausschau nach Beute.

Der eine hatte seine Federn gegen die Morgenkälte aufgeplustert.

In diesen milden Temperaturen sind die Spaziergange durch den Wald problemlos.

Das Moos zwischen den Bäumen ist immer noch grün.

Manchmal gab es über Nacht ein paar Zentimeter Schnee, 

aber das blieb nicht lange liegen.

Jeder Tag ohne Schneeschaufeln ist ein Tag der uns dem Frühjahr näher bring.

Meistens mache ich ja Landschaftsaufnahmen, 

oder Photos von Peter und Dixie.

Heute mal eine Aufnahme von mir. 

Ausserdem habe ich auf einem der Morgenspaziergänge mal ein "Selfie" versucht.

Zusammen mit Peter ist das kein Problem, der ist immer fröhlich.

Bei herrlichem Frühlingswetter habe ich mit ein paar Bekannten einen Ausflug entlang der Küste gemacht.

Wir haben dabei allerlei Wasservögel beobachten können und haben im Großen und Ganzen 

einfach die schöne Aussicht genossen.
