Almost Done

Almost done with 2019

Fall came with its beautiful colours.
We did a lot of hiking around.
It was so nice being outside in the mild days of
 September and October.

The first snow came and melted again.
The days got shorter and
the fierce winter storms started to torment us.

Business as usual I should say.

What do we do all day long? We started on a renovation project
that I have had in mind for quite a while.
Finally!
The walls were opened in one of the unused rooms and double insulated.
Lots of dust and dirt around the house, but it will be worth while
in the end. We never used the room it was to cold int the winter and too hot in the summer.
The plan is to make it into a nice and cosy guest room.
Now we are in the process of choosing a colour for the walls.

I unearthed my knitting and crocheting needles and joint a group of likeminded
women who meet at the public library once a week to socialize and knit/crochet.
Owl-hat
The first projects were a bit funny and I did a lot of unravelling,
 Cozy slippers
old fashioned pot holders

but I am getting the hang of it again.

The only thing is my eyes are getting tired from of the
short distance much quicker then they used to. Even with the new glasses.

I used to sit and watch the birds coming to the feeder but this year is weird. No bird around.
Luckily I did not buy a big bag of seed yet. The amount that I went through within two month is minimal.
The most is still unused in the bag. Where did all the birds go?

One of the last sunsets before the sun turned again. Soon the days will be longer and
Will be on the way to spring again.
Last seconds of the setting sun before she disappears behind distant tree tops.

But first we have days of celebration ahead. Christmas Day and a new year are close.

As usual it will be a quiet affair with family so far away, We will visit with some friends though,
but mostly enjoy the warmth of our living room.
With that I finish up this last posting of the year 2019 and wish all of you
a good time with friends and family.
May the new year bring all you wish for and more.
Until 2020
See you!

Die warmen Herbsttage sind längst vorbei. Wir haben sie gut genutzt und die
Farbenpracht bewundert.

After Season Freedom

Despite some early fall storms the weather had been delightful
and warm for the most of the days this October.
Pink Fall Aster/Chrysanthemum Hybrid
We took advantage of the "after season" free time
and went on several nice hikes, visiting our favourite trails.
Trail over mossy ground
One leads to Sunsweep Scupture, an about 1, 5 hour hike.
View of Ragged Point
Along the path we saw Double-crested Cormorants

and we took a few moments to admire the view.

We were not the only ones taking
photos of the sculpture.

On another day we saw Harbour Seals and Grey Seals

sunning themselves on ledges that are just below the water's surface near
Racoon Beach

Always an interesting photo object.

The woods were still colourfu these days
and a little Song Sparrow was watching us as
we walked by.

Soon, Halloween will be upon us, but there will be no "trick and treat".

Another storm with high winds and lots of rain is predicted
for the last day of October.

Dixie on the Golf Course

Today the weather turned sunny and mild in the afternoon
and I decided to take Dixie for her afternoon walk
across the local golf course.
The golf season is over, the Club House is closed for the winter,
but people are allowed to use the area.
We try to stay on the Fringe, the rough, grassy edges, as much as possible
and only cross the Fairway if necessary.
It is always so peaceful.
At the bottom of this Fairway there is small lake where
rainwater run-off gathers.
Several small trails, used by the caretakers,
connect the Fairways. They are nice short cuts for us and
Dixie is allowed to run off leash.
The grass is covered with colourful maple leaves.
I use the opportunity to train the command: "sit"
Perfect- on a distance of 15m (49')
Dixie is looking around, questioning herself
as to "why" I choose to ask her to sit.
She always does that when I call er in or command her to sit.
There must be a reason, or? - she seems to think.
I have spotted people/dogs and taken her on the leash
before Dixie gets aware of them.
Better safe than sorry.
No-one around this time.
After about an hours walk
we are ready to leave for home.
A last look around, enjoying the sunlight.
Dixie - our big girl.
Great Pyrenee/Anatolian Shepherd/whatever mixed breed.

Breezy and Colourful

Dixie's look tells me it is:
Time for her walk!
Off we go.
Fall is a time of glowing colours.
The red, the orange, the yellow and bronze.
It is not as spectacular here as on the mainland
but there are spots of brightness to be found.
One of the walks close to home lead me across
an old, small cemetery.
It dates back to around 1830.
The old trees always give a lot shelter from the wind.
Nearby: St. Anne's Anglican Church.
Further on, walking along North Road
a fierce Northwestern was whipping up whitecaps,
even a few flurries were in the air at times,
reminding me of the winter to come
with its relentless storms.
Today, the gales where strong enough
to keep passengers of the small cruise ship "Pearl Mist"
from visiting Campobello.
They waited all afternoon for an improvement in the weather -
which never came.
After anchoring the night in Friar's Bay
the "Pearl Mist" will depart in the morning towards St. Andrews, NB.

Back from the walk, at home
a drought stressed forsythia has started to bloom again.
Some late roses and nasturtiums
are brightening up my vegetable garden.
I love the fall colours
but hate the messengers of a new winter to come.

As you see, I finally found out how to write a text into my photos.
I just was too lazy to update all of them. :)

Late September Day

After a night with heavy rain and thunder the day turned out
mild and sunny.
Perfect for the daily walk along our favourite beach.
The crowds were definitely thinner this season because
the ferry connection to the mainland via Deer Island never came to life.
The boat company did not get the new barge going in time.
Subsequently it was a bad summer for many businesses who lost out on a lot of potential guests,
because not everyone is comfortable with taking the land route through Maine
to get to Campobello Island.
So, we mostly had the beaches for ourselves.
Just a few people here and there and they never walk as far as we do anyway.
A driftwood pile adorns the beach just waiting for the
next storm to take it apart.
A fishing vessel out on the bay, the island Grand Manan in the background.
Every year we are considering taking the ferry to see how it looks like over there.
So far it has not happened.
We are always too busy with work during the summer.
Off leash time!
Dixie has a great time digging deep holes into the soft sand.
And we appreciate when she digs here than on our lawn.

At home there was a newly backed batch of ginger cookies waiting for us.
Soon there will be Halloween and Pumpkin time!

Fall is here.
